Honestly, the days of building your own for cheaper arent really true anymore. Unless you want the most amazing thing and the highest specs around, you can buy a pretty stock one in a store and upgrade the power supply and graphics cards and be able to play most games out now.

Hell best buy has towers around the 300-500 range with i5 processors and you just upgrade the power supply for 50-80 bucks and the graphics card for 60-150 bucks you got a decent rig

Spend some time on google, it's quite easy to find tech forums where this topic has been discussed to death. If you are willing to buy the parts online and build it yourself you can find some decent builds for that price.
