Does anyone else find it ironic that as a nation we are now being taxed more than when we had the American Revolution? And during that war, the nation was split down the middle as well.

Times are completely different now than then. The founding fathers could never imagine things such as ICBM's, planes that could cross the atlantic in a few hours, the requirements for a Navy to defend us on both oceans (and one ship cost us more than the entire continental Navy), the cost of highways and interstates, etc...

So what you're saying is because we have advanced technology, that the government has more right to take what I earn? 40% is 40% no matter when we are talking about.

The point was that the government provides a lot more services then it did back then. Some of them have been made necessary by advances in society and technology, others are supported by the majority of the people. Take social security for example. People might complain about the tax, but I don't think that any politician that comes out in support of abolishing it would stand a chance of winning an election.
