There are a lot more Americans than many think who have never talked to nor really seen a black person (other than TV). Especially in some areas of Maine, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, northern Nevada & Alaska.
Far western NC, Va & WVA & far east Tennessee also come into play in the remote areas.

Most people don't know history period so I'm not sure how this is a surprise, startling, or even "telling" in any way.
It certainly isn't racist that these people don't know anything but I'm sure someone is going to claim that.

People know what they know. Most Americans are more specialists like the character Sherlock Holmes was. They know their trade and that's about it. Knowing whether the earth rotates the sun or the sun rotates the earth won't be of much use in many professions.
