fug Goodell. He completed the transformation of the NFL from being about the sport of football to being about money. It's now pretty much entirely an entertainment league.

Exactly.

You may not like the way he dishes out punishment and discipline. However, there is absolutely no denying the phenomenal job he has done running the NFL as a business. The expansion of viewership and profitablity under his watch has been outstanding.

Unlike many commishioners in the past, he is a buinessman....and is effectively running the league like the multi billion dollar business that it is.

You're inability to cite a specific example of what he's done to increase league profits is telling.

Goodell is simply rising a wave of popularity which began in the mid nineties.

That wave is so powerful, in fact, that the league survived his own ill conceived plans to destroy it.

I agree with Roddy, Goodell is overpaid and a lousy commish. A lot of people on this board could do his job as well as him.

I disagree with this line of thinking that a lot of us can do what he does or be in his position.

While a lot of people around the world could make some decisions regarding the game, just like real business in the US few of us has what it takes to actually qualify for such a position. For 20+ years Roger worked hard from his start as an intern and worked his way up the ladder impressing his employer and bosses along the way. So yes while some of us may be able to do aspects of his job, how many of us is capable of doing what he did to get to that position. That's what we over look in the US... we want to jump straight to the top and not look at what’s required to get there... IMO getting there is as much of the battle.

No as a commissioner compared to other commissioners how has he done? That can be argued or debated either way. Just depends on how you evaluate success at that position.

I would agree more with White is Roger had just graduated from college, proved very little and was given that kind of money and put in charge. But I respect his climb to get to his position and salary that he receives today.

lol "his climb."

He went right out of his hoity toity private college into an internship with Pete Rozelle because his dad was a US Senator, then just sorta hung around for 26 years until he had enough swag to be put in control.

The only way he could have worked less was if he was born commissioner. Get your facts straight.

Goodell has done a good job as far as not completely tanking the league. I'm not going to say how much the guy should get paid but 20 mil does seem excessive.

People can shake their heads all they want about someone making 50 mil for running and catching....you're the ones responsible for his pay.

Im not sure what else you'd call manufacturing a fake crisis and locking out players, unless youre one of those people that still think it was a strike.

Fortunately he and the owners were outmaneuvered and badly misplayed their hand.

It's business. Any businessman who is looking to maximize profit is going to go as far as possible to get the cheapest price without losing profits, which is what Goodell did. He didn't lose any regular season games, while still able to get some of the things he wanted in the new CBA. What else could he do? Immediately give in to all the player's demands? You might not like what happened, but I highly doubt that Goodell would have let it slip into where football wasn't going to be played for a season. He's too much of a businessman.
