Draft analyst still would take QB Luck over Newton

Even after Cam Newton's record-setting rookie season, NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock says he'd still take Andrew Luck over the Panthers' quarterback if the two were in the same draft.

During a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Mayock initially balked at comparing Luck to the last three No. 1 picks - Newton, Sam Bradford and Matthew Stafford - and to Matt Ryan, who went third overall in 2008.

Mayock then said Luck is close to Peyton Manning in terms of ability, adding he would draft Luck over the player who broke Manning's rookie passing record.

"I would probably take him over Cam, yeah," Mayock said.

Mayock would be great as the captain of a ship. Unlike the guy in Italy.

I don't wish failure on anybody but damn if I don't want him to kind of suck so all these media guys can shut up and eat crow. And from what I can tell its not his fault its the media guys hyping him up but it just annoys the crap out if me.

I'd like luck to be decent but not as good as Cam. But obviously that's the case since Cam is the QB for the Panthers, I want him to be better than every other QB in the NFL (Tied with Rivers since I'm a State fan :p).

Once Luck is in the league for a while this hype will stop and he will just be judged on his performance, like any other QB. He's not The Golden Calf of Bristol.

Would be cool to see though, 4 straight first overall picks be quarterbacks and none of them bust, in a position that has its share of historical first overall pick busts.

This is just insane. The guy has not won more (national titles, heisman tropies) and did not play against better competition. He did however play with more nfl first round talent on his team. Why he would have better intangibles than a guy that won 3 national titles in 3 years with 3 different teams I have no idea. He did not have better stats. He's not bigger, stronger, faster, nor does he have a better arm. He preferred to play with amateurs rather than play with the best, despite losing his coach.

:cam: manned up and played against the best the world has to offer and despite a limited off season was the best rookie in nfl history. There is ZERO logic to this debate whatsoever!!!:beatdeadhorse5:

Luck will develope but he can't move in the pocket like can did his first year. IMO he will be the next Eli Manning.

I guess you haven't paid much attention to how arrogant those in the media really are. Even if Luck turns out to be another Jimmy Clausen, they will blame it on everyone on the team before they will admit that Luck isn't the second coming of Peyton, Brees, Aaron rodger, and Tom Brady all rolled up into his body.

No he won't. Bite your tongue. Eli has don't more with his inconsistancies in his 8 years as a Giant than even his brother has done with his.

Those who are hyping Luck can't even say what makes him better than RGIII except that he came from a Pro-ready offense.
