Doesn't matter what "everybody else does", Saints got caught and they should be severely punished.

If everybody else does it, then this is a perfect opportunity to make an example out of the Saints. They should be stripped of multiple draft picks, heavily fined, Payton and Williams should be suspended for the season and Loomis should be dismissed immediately. Anything less then that is a joke after all this emphasis on player safety.

There is a difference between players trying to take out other players, and players GETTING PAID to take out other players.

The Saints are digusting, and thankfully they finally got caught before hurting one of the Panthers.

Pro Football Weekly ‏ @ProFootballWkly

Per @SI_PeterKing, #Saints LB Jonathan Vilma offered any def. teammate $10,000 to knock Brett Favre out of the 2009 NFC Championship Game.

Only problem is that they were motivated by illegal incentives that other teams did not receive.

which would likely incur penalties to the team overall, including loss of draft picks, suspensions, fines. overall I would not be surprised if the team was gutted by this, because this comes at a time when Goodell is pushing hard to promote safety in order to secure the NFL, long-term, when many are predicting huge legal troubles relating to player safety in the very near future.

Maybe they should use the bounty money to help make up the difference in the Brees contract talks.

The most alarming finding by the league, according to one club source who was briefed on the investigation late Friday afternoon, was this: Before the 2009 NFC Championship Game, Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma offered any defensive teammate $10,000 in cash to knock then-Vikings quarterback Brett Favre out of the game. Favre was hit viciously several times in the game. That fact was in a report to the 32 NFL owners, sent out by the league to detail further what the league's 50,000-page investigation found.

holy hell 50k pages

The league said there was an initial investigation, after the 2009 season, into a bounty system led by Williams that could not be corroborated. Then, Goodell said "significant and credible'' new information was forthcoming late in the 2011 season that led to the findings the league acted on Friday. Those conclusions found that Saints players were paid off-the-books incentives for some outstanding performances such as interceptions -- obviously in violation of the league's salary cap -- as well as $1,000 and $1,500 payments for injuring opposing players.
