Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Saints have applied the franchise tag to quarterback Drew Brees.
A league source tells PFT that it’s the exclusive version of the tag, which prevents Brees from talking to any other teams — and which eliminates the risk of some other franchise offering Brees a huge contract and giving the Saints two first-round picks if the Saints choose not to match.
It’s not a surprise. The non-exclusive tag for quarterbacks will cost roughly $14.4 million for 2012. As explained Friday, just before the bounty brouhaha broke, the exclusive tender is expected to land between $15 million and $16 million, due in large part to the coming release of Peyton Manning and the recent restructuring of Ben Roethlisberger’s contract.

This is going to be fun to watch.

The move means that guard Carl Nicks will hit the market absent a new deal. We reported last night that, as of Friday, the Saints hadn’t made Nicks an offer.

See... Now it'll be hilarious if Goodell takes the franchise tag from them, but leaves the cap hit.

Brees is the best thing ever to happen for the Saints. Why not just pay him rather than pay him a little less and piss him off?

Well guys, at least they'll be able to replace either Colston or Nicks with their first round draft choice.

It's about getting picks now. And I bet the Redskins are ready and waiting.

No way they trade Brees. This isn't Manning who may never play again like he used to...Brees is still a top 3 QB. I know they will loose picks with the bounty fiasco but they won't stock up at the cost of Brees.

What an "un"fortunate turn of events the past couple days! Now I'm just waiting to hear the news that Matt Ryan has been hosting an interstate ring of illicit donkey shows and the Buccaneers decided to retire as a franchise.

Bwahahahaha.

This is actually bad news for the rest of the NFC south and brilliant by the Saints. They can now take a lower cap hit with Brees and have $$ to sign Colston and Nicks. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the plan all along. After signing the other two and with the Cap potentially increasing they can then sign Brees to long term deal. Loomis again showing why he is best GM in the league.
