A legit reason could be so that others could not beat her to it and make money off her son. From what I read, her reasoning was so she could use it to raise money via DVDs and TV shirts to get justice for Trayvon's murder. I think that is legitimate - there will likely be some cost to all of this, and if not, perhaps she can donate the money to a worthy cause. I'm not going to condemn her for it yet, but I will be massively disappointed if it turns out she was using it to make money off of all this.

So would the thousands of people who wear homemade I am trayvon shirts and post it on pinterest and twitter and Facebook then need to pay her instead of just doing it out of the goodness of their hearts? That much I can't answer you, but I would like to believe she wouldn't do something like that.

I do not think it is all that absurd for her to try to trademark the phrases if she is trying to do it so she can have some control over what her son's "imagery" (not literally his likeness but the phrases) is associated with commercially. But again, I don't know the details here.
