all overpaid IMO when all their contracts were negotiated

steve smith? getting paid for the being the best receiver in the game? pretty sure he deserved it.

beason is prolly the 2nd best ILB in the game right now, I'd say he deserves it.

if we didn't pay CJ then someone else would have and we would have NOTHING on the dline.

gamble has always had the talent of what we paid him, Foxy's scheme just didn't work with him as effectively. gamble is a man to man cover guy (a la revis island) and just showed us why we pay him big bucks.

there are 31 other teams in the NFL that would be ecstatic to have players like this on their team and would easily match our offer, or pay more.

the only true instance of overpaying i saw over the last few years would probably be deangelo. i think we intentionally overpaid him to make up for his '08 season and to help out cam.

They said they weren't going to big players in free agency. They normally are not, as it is not part of the teams plan, from the owner on down.

Sometimes it seems like most of the biggest whiners here were in grade school in the 90s. Back then, we played a lot in FA, and got burned. Richardson doesn't like it, and that attitude is reflected throughout the organization.

This is due to the inability of the FO to use FA accurately and resourcefully.

Plenty of teams get great deals in FA. Hurney sucks at it plain and simple. He has weaknesses. Can't draft a WR or DT. He needs to realize this and spend more time trying to get a good FA deal. As we saw last year there was PLENTY that were a good deal and didn't turn to poo.

Don't blame using FA as the bad aspect here, it's only bad if you can't bring in the right players which the Panthers had trouble with.

I am not whining at anything, for me the proof is in the pudding. I hate cliches but it's true. If Hurney formula was working why have we not been able to win with it? When we were a force several years ago FA helped up quite a bit and we haven't utilized it since.

half you people in this thread really didn't read a damn word he said did you?

always a dick measuring contest on the internet i swear...

I understand what you are getting at OP. You don't want VJax, or Mario, or any elite talent like that, you just want guys who are considered marginally better than Munnerlyn, and Fua, and NaNee, etc., the kind of guys we signed for our playoff run in 03.

Which is what Hurney tries to do.

the problem i have with hurney's philosophy is that if you dont hit on almost all your draft picks, you can really screw yourself.

I agree...Hurney is a coaches GM. He drafts who the coaches want to a large degree.

With one exception.....the 2010 draft was a pure Hurney draft. He had no coach to draft for. It brought us such studs as Clausen, Armanti

It also brought us LaFell, Gettis, Hardy, and some depth in Stanford and Pugh. You got to take the good with the bad.

i also have the strange feeling that people think everything will be great because we have cam and the old "year of experience under their belt and full offseason and otas".

Cam is great but he not quite at the level where he can mask all of our deficiences.

When was the last time we spend a ton of money for a premier player and they had an all=pro season? I can't remember 1 ever. When was the last time we paid big bucks for a very good player and they had an All-pro season. Mike Wahle in 2005??? When was the last time we had an All-pro player who we drafted and developed make the pro-bowl- Newton, Smith, Gross, Kalil in 2011.

The draft always will be the best way to go to find your stars and starters. What is free agency for? Finding guys who are cheap, coming back from injury, upcoming stars not yet discovered, etc who can fill roles and help the team. This is one area where Hurney does a very good job. Just last year he gets Nannee who helps the receivers learn the scheme, they bring in Kearse and Shirley who shore up the middle when the rookies are overwhelmed and Edwards go down prematurely. When Davis and Beason go down unexpectedly, Hurney brings in Gaither, Senn, WIlliams, Phillips to fill in. Not exactly stars but what can you expect at that point.

He goes out and brings in Shockey and trades for Olsen to give Newton one of the best tight end attacks in the NFC last year.

Honestly I understand the whining if you look for the FA big splash and haven't follwed the Panthers since 1995. But if you have been around for the whole ride, you have seen the big splashes and know they don't pan out for us. You know some of our best FAs were guys like Stephen Davis who was coming back from injury and Delhomme who was really a nobody before he came here. You know that role players are just as important as stars and realize that you need more journeymen and blue collar guys who are cheap than you do big splash free agents. You know that the Ricky Proehls are every bit as important as the big name Wes Welkers but can be had more reasonably.

You also know that Hurney is one of the best going through the scrap pile looking for hidden gems, finding value in the 6th and 7th rounds of the draft. So you just sit back and watch what happens. Like watching a football game, it isn't the guys who are making noise at the beginning of the game that matters, but the guys who are making noise at the end. The same applies to the draft especially if you don't have 30 million in cap space.

There are going to be almost 600 free agents available. Why lock guys up day 1 and overpaying when there will be literally hundreds of guys willing to sign for cheap just to have the opportunity to play this year. Hence the reason we didn't sign any of our UFAs or tender Schwartz.

What p55 said. To add to what p55 said, Buckner always used to say on his radio show here in Charlotte that the best free agents are the guys who have a chip on their shoulder or have something to prove.

Only player I can think of we signed through FA, no trades that came in had a significant impact on defense was Lucas and Buckner. Its been several moves on offense though
