The average bust rate is 50% in the 2nd round in the NFL while ours is about 80% unless you want to include Marshall and Martin as a success then we are about average..My guess is we have deviated from the BPA and drafted for a need.I have also linked a study that is a bit outdated but still relevant.Who in this years 2nd round is a sure thing and should we draft them?
http://walterfootbal...tology408_2.php
.
:Armanti Edwards (2011) - How can you draft a guy to play WR when you don't know if he has good hands or not?
Jimmy Clausen (2010) - I gave him a bad evaluation on draft day, got neg repped for it, then got to hear Hurney gush over him. Disaster.
Ryan Kalil
Sherrod Martin (2009) - too soon to tell
packed in a deal to get Jeff Otah (2008) - jury is still out on Otah
Dwayne Jarrett (2007) - had all the physical tools to be a good possession reciever, but couldn't learn the playbook
Richard Marshall (2006) - good CB
Eric Shelton (2005) - disaster
Keary Colbert (2004) - knew he was a slow WR, gambled and lost
Bruce Nelson (2003) - injury problems
DeShaun Foster (2002) - very good RB

My thoughts in bold.

So what happens if we somehow got Claiborne in the 1st, and Janoris Jenkins is available when we pick in the 2nd? Do we still go BPA?

I wouldn't call Foster a bust. Sure he fumbled a bunch and near the end here, we all hated him, but he was crucial to our Superbowl run and that TD against Philly will always be one of the best plays in Panther history. Not to mention his epic dive into the endzone in the Superbowl.

Marshall wasn't a bust, as he was almost a solid starter for us.

It's too early to call Martin a bust yet. Sometimes you have a down year. Before all of us were slurping Gamble this year, most were highly critical of his down years... Just saying.

JC and DJ are pure poo, along with Shelton. JC and DJ were BPA while Shelton was an outlier deviation as we went with the need to find a power back to replace Davis, and Hurney was blinded by that and deviated from BPA. Also, minus round 1, 2005 might have been our lousiest draft class.

EB trade was horrible and inexcusable. The FO really was blinded by the need to gain leverage over Pep and made a foolish decision.

Kalil was a grand slam though.

After the first round, it's really a crapshoot when you're adding talent. Look at NE and their millions of 2nd round picks in the same timeframe. Most of them haven't panned out either. Hell, half of the teams drafting in the first round draft mega busts, when we haven't fuged up a 1st round pick in a long time (EB doesn't count).

Bruce Nelson doesn't count because of his severe degenerative injury, which you can't really predict based off of his collegiate resume. Just bad luck.

Yea I think Hurney said that the reason they have succeeded in the ist over the 2nd is they deviated from their draft philosophy in the 2nd.They probably do the same in the 3rd and go back to the BPA in the 4th and further down .

doubt it, probably olb or dline, just depends on who is there. no matter how much teams preach BPA BPA BPA no team really goes straight BPA.

Hey we would be good at cb for a while. What Hurney said was you draft BPA unless there is someone of almost an equal grade at that pick

I think it has more to do with how bad we are at predicting where players will land. You have 30 something visits and you'll use some of those for more than your first pick. Maybe some of the guys we thought would fall didn't and we ended up picking someone who we didn't think would be available in the second round.

If we somehow got Claiborne and then Lavonte David in the second, I'd be pumped. Or if we traded back and got more picks and got Gilmore and then David that'd be pretty cool too.

I remember several interviews over the years after the draft and they would explain the thought process behind each pick and I heard on many of the 2nd rounders the reason was "value" and "BPA"

they picked dwayne jarrett because he was such great value there in the 2nd
they said clausen was BPA

they didn't deviate from anything, they just made bad picks. it's easy to spin it and say, "ohh our philosophy and evaluations are perfect, we just deviated from them but we wont do that again" rather than just being straight and saying yeah we fugged up, we thought those guys were great values/BPA but we're just not the best talent evaluators in the world

I was just paraphrasing what Hurney was saying today not preaching it as gospel.

I don't see Otah on the list. A 2nd was used to get him just like Edwards.

i understand you're just the messanger, repeating what he said and not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with it. I just have to call BS on what he said that's all.

he says right after the draft they were such great value and BPA , then a couple years later after everyone realizes the picks suck it turns into, oh damn we shouldn't have deviated from our BPA philosophy with those picks I guess.

give me a break

Damn...that Ravens list irritated me...they've been pretty much nailing their 1st and 2nd rounders for quite a while
