We only had $440,000 cap room prior to this deal. This explains why we haven't made Jordan Senn's re-signing official yet.
We freed up $4.74 million with this deal now have approx 5.18mil in cap room.
Look for us to re-sign Shockey as well as another 3rd tier FA like Jason Brown or Rocky McIntosh w/that cap room.

Smith's deal is appropriate for his age and future potential. Smith knows that you don't get huge deals at 32 if you aren't a quarterback. He got good money but it was likely less than he could have gotten elsewhere not more. I don't think he got less because of a bad reputation but I do think he did give us a hometown discount. He told us that he wanted to stay here because of his family and Smith puts family above all else. Look at how many deals other guys with a few issues get as long as they are productive. He was top 5 in the league last year. He has been pretty much a choir boy for the past few years.

I love the deal, Smith is imo the best panther ever and I'm hoping he retires here when all is said and done.

This is the best re-sign we've done.

The big salaries are towards the end of the deal and aren't guaranteed.

...like the vast majority of contracts.

You're basing this on what, exactly?

You know, there are some who will say that Smitty's occasional fits of temper disqualify him from consideration as an example of what the best in being a Panther is all about, but I would beg to differ. I think on the whole, he has been the ultimate team player, and I would like to cast my vote early to see him in bronze near Sam Mills when he hangs up his cleats.

Smitty is a GREAT WR.

Hasn't been a great teammate or lockerroom guy overall based on reports. He has punched a reported 3 teammates, in 2008 the team told him they always had to walk on egg shells around, and he was a dick as recently as 2010 to a QB put in a situation to fail making life much harder on the kid.

Smith is one of the most talented WRs I have ever had the pleasure to watch.....but homersim gets out of control. So now I am painted as a Smitty hater bc I wont buy into this illusion he has been an ideal teammate?

Smitty is a great WR, seems like a good guy off the field......but nothing suggests he has been a great teammate overall. But who cares....that aint a requirement for him to be a great Panther. Put painting these false pictures of guys is silly.

Does anyone else see that 5 mil going to Shockey?

It better fuging not for his 2011 production.

5 mil a year? no way.

i hope they keep widening the amount of cap space with extensions and wait until after the draft to see what holes still need to be filled. if we're pretty much set defensively, go ahead and sign shockey (and, i hope, find a way to extend stew.)

Shock isnt worth more than a 1 yr 1 mill deal imo.

He wasn't a huge impact dude outside of his nasty attitude that he brings.
