NPR has learned that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire at the end of the current court term. The vacancy will give President Obama his first chance to name a member of the high court and begin to shape its future direction.

he leans left anyways so it won't tip the balance.

Just in time after a Spector defection. Coincidence? I wonder if Arlen got a payoff like Jeffords did. I mean...it's happened before...right Jim Black?

I think OB ought to nominate the octa-mom (Nadya Sulema). She has all the qualities and experiences that he'd be looking for in a nominee.

When the appointment hearings crank up...just watch and see if they bring up Obama's old quotes when he held up ...I think...Alito. Not sure about Roberts. See if he expresses the same desire for minority voice from the Senate.

i hope they do. he spoke against filibustering Alito.

“There’s one way to guarantee that the judges who are appointed to the Supreme Court are judges that reflect our values. And that’s to win elections."

“There is an over-reliance on the part of Democrats for procedural maneuvers.”

"These last-minute efforts--using procedural maneuvers inside the Beltway--I think has been the wrong way of going about it."

Do as I say...not as I do. Yet another Obamaism.

Did he join the filibuster against Alito?

Here...I'll help you.
