The team's first-round pick excelled at Alabama, but entered the pros missing one important on-field skill.

"I never backpedaled," he told the Bengals' official site .

Kirkpatrick played a lot of press man coverage in a Cover 2 scheme under Nick Saban. He said he wasn't asked to sit back and read receivers on their routes. All of this has made his first offseason in Cincinnati an adventure.

"It didn't look pretty," Kirkpatrick said of his first three days of practice with the team. Coach Marvin Lewis and his defensive staff are impressed with Kirkpatrick's development, but he won't be rushed into action. The Bengals are knee-deep in defensive backs. Leon Hall and Nate Clements should be ready for training camp after dealing with injuries this spring. Terence Newman and rookie Brandon Ghee are in the fold. And don't forget about Pacman Jones.

That's pretty darned amazing. :o

1. There was a significant number of Panther fans on this forum that wanted to draft him with the 9th overall pick.

and

2. Hurney and Rivera may well have drafted a more NFL-ready cornerback in the 5th round (Norman) than the Bengals did with the 17th overall pick.

That, to me, is relevant. Your mileage may vary.

He never back pedaled? Isn't that one of the first things they teach you to do when you're a CB? That sad actually.

I seriously doubt he never back peddled.

Alabama defense runs a different scheme. A very successful one I might add!

Wouldn't he have at least had to show his backpedal at the combine? Or did he not participate in the drills? I don't remember...

I was kind of hoping for him too. Didn't think it would happen though. Maybe he's high.

Norman in the 5th, if he becomes a starting Corner will be one of the best draft picks. A steal.

This is why I told people Gilmore would go before Dre.

All those calling him more NFL ready just didn't watch college football.

i was at a clinic and Saban explained there base coverage. no off man at all.like Dre said it was press man or palms which is a cover 2/ cover 4 hybrid.he backpedaled using the to zones but they were not that detailed.
