Hurricanes acquire Jordan Staal

Jordan Staal is looking forward to getting an opportunity to show what he can do offensively with the Carolina Hurricanes.

"It's a new challenge for me," Staal said. "I'm excited to get a lot of wins, make the playoffs and see what we can do." In Pittsburgh, he was often stuck behind Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby on the depth charts. Now he's likely to get far more playing time with the man advantage and possibly even first line minutes. This move certainly boosts his fantasy value.

From Rotoworld

Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford plans to start negotiations with Jordan Staal for a contract extension this summer.

Staal, who Carolina acquired from Pittsburgh on Friday, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2013. He rejected the Penguins 10-year offer believed to be worth $60 million before the trade, but Carolina is hoping that he'll be more willing to talk with them. The advantage that Carolina has is that Staal's brother, Eric, is already a major player within their organization. The prospect of playing with his brother for years could be enough to convince Jordan to sign with the Hurricanes

Eric Staal might end up playing on the same line as his brother, Jordan Staal.

Jordan was acquired by the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. They're both centers, but Eric Staal could shift to the wing to allow them to play together. Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said it's possible, although we'll probably have to wait until training camp before we'll know more.

I'm stoked, good trade IMO, though it was a bit costly.

That's from Bob McKenzie, one of the most respected men in hockey.

Hey, from the Hurricanes FB page, someone quoted JR as saying it's up to Mueller to decide if the Staal's will be on the same line or not. So maybe McKenzie was assuming Jordan was that 1st line forward JR wanted to pair with Eric. So there is still hope Jordan is our 2nd line center and we can go back to looking for just 1 more center since we have plenty of wings...

I heard what Rutherford had to say on it...

He said that they would think about it, the ultimate decision would be up to Muller and if they can acuire another winger and center that they would in all likely hood play Jordan with Eric.

By the way Eric played on the wing with Jordan as the center at the World Championships in Moskow. So it has been done before.

That makes more sense to do than sticking them together right away.

I agree, I mentioned to a few guys yesterday that acquiring Alexander Semin and Kyle Wellwood would go a long way to making us a contending team again.

I posted this depth chart yesterday.

Eric Staal - Jordan Staal - Alexander Semin

Jeff Skinner - Kyle Wellwood - Tuomo Ruutu

Jussi Jokinen - Jeremy Welsh - Jiri Tlusty

Patrick Dwyer - Tim Brent - Chad LaRose

Andreas Nodl

Anthony Stewart

Tim Gleason - Justin Faulk

Ryan Murphy - Jay Harrison

Joni Pitkanen - Jamie McBain

Derek Joslin

Cam Ward

Brian Boucher

Also in the mix... Drayson Bowman, Jerome Samson, Brett Sutter, Zac Dalpe, Zach Boychuk, Riley Nash, Bobby Sanguinetti, Victor Rask, and Justin Peters.

We have to find a different backup goalie. Boucher sucks ass.

Ain't that the truth, I would like Peters to be the backup, but he will walk in free agency.
