To the OP,

Playing in Carolina has actually helped Smitty's career. We've shown loyalty to him and always featured him. Not many receivers in this league can say they've been with one team 12 seasons and have been the guy for that length as well. He's an incredible talent and the best player we've had IMO, but Im not sure his situation here would've been identical on other squads for as long.

He's had a great career relative to most NFL players, so he hasnt wasted his talent and he obviously likes being here.

Steve Smith did not waste his time here, but it would have been interesting to see what he would have achieved if he had a consistently good QB throwing to him

Time to highjack the thread...

Who thinks Josh Gordon would be a good receiver to pair with Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell, David Gettis, Kealoha Pilares, and Joe Adams?

That way, when Smith retires we already have our future in place at the wide receiver position with Josh "Flash" Gordon, Brandon LaFell, David Gettis, Kealoha Pilares, and Joe Adams...

Maybe a third (we have no fourth) or fifth round pick in the supplemental draft.

Similar specs to Gettis in height and such. I wouldn't be against it.

Food For Thought (On whether Smith wasted his talent in Carolina): Record Watch

Steve Smith should be able to climb all the way to twenty second on the all-time receiving yards list this year passing Harold Jackson, Keyshawn Johnson, Stanley Morgan, Gary Clark, Joey Galloway, Keenan McCardell, Rod Smith, and the Panthers own Muhsin Muhammad.

What's even more impressive is that Smith will rank SIXTH on the all-time receiving yards list for players who started and finished their career with only ONE team. The current individuals in front of Smith include Marvin Harrison (Colts), Steve Largent (Seahawks), Hines Ward (Steelers), Michael Irvin (Cowboys), Reggie Wayne (Colts), and Rod Smith (Broncos). He will likely pass Rod Smith this year.

We don't have a fourth rounder, and I know you meant pro number but Gettis wore number four at Baylor (I had to check for myself after seeing Gordon play for the first time lol).

Sorry lol

According to KFFL, one NFC team has given Gordon a 3rd round grade, (could it be the Panthers, I sure hope so).

You guys are harsh. He makes half a point. If Steve had spent his career in Indianapolis or New England he would be an absolute lock for the HOF. As things are now, he needs to have several more good years to get consideration.
