Information on where he was / what he was doing before these were discovered might help.

Agree - background info would be helpful. If they start to get crusty and yellow/honey in color with bigger blisters (possible), might be impetigo. Otherwise, that vague pic kinda looks like angry bug bites to me. Watch them closely to see if the red spreads.

kids get all kinds of stuff. foot and mouth disease, fifths etc. if you haven't already and have access to one, utilize your nurses hotline if you have a pediatrician.
when our kids were very young we would call BEFORE going to the doc to make sure it was something that just would need time or rest or over the counter or it would have to run it's course.
could save you lots of time and money and uncessary worry.

Look like bites of some kind. Do they itch?

Could be a reaction to any number of insect bites. Need a bit more info, but I have seen people have reactions that look a bit like that to bed bug bites. Typical responses I think are smaller than that though, but you never know.

Usually ringworm has a ring pattern. Not always. Would be trying to scratch it though.

It looks to be some kind of bite, to me at least... I'd guess it was deerfly/horsefly in nature...

It is very hard to tell though, because people's skin reacts differently to different things...

Could just be mosquito bites...
