Peter Jackson has just confirmed he will split The Hobbit into three films, the third of which will be released sometime in summer 2014. Jackson dropped hints about this at Comic-Con,

All about $$$. He'll make more box-office if he splits it up. Plus, it's easier to fit any story in 3 movies rather than 1. It better be detailed as poo though.

people forget this but the hobbit compared to the other books had a lot more thrown into it, moving it to 3 movies IMO is a good move, last movie should be all kinds of awesomeness.

It's not about what was in The Hobbit, it's about what was in the LOTR appendices concerning events going on at the same time, mostly the White Councils attack against Dol Goldur. No specifics were given about that so we should see PJ and Phillippa get to write some stuff of their own.

The Hobbit as a story is really kind of light weight as written but there are things that can be made really, really cool like Beorn, the Wargs and Eagles, the spiders...

Don't talk rubbish. The Hobbit is a couple of steps below LOTRs in terms of quality. This is simply Jackson milking the franchise for all it's worth - there's never 3 films of material.

You make 3 movies for Homer's Odyssey, Tolstoy's War and Peace, or King's Unabridged The Stand but for The Hobbit?

I'm right there with the worst of the Tolkien nerds but I just don't see 6+ hours of movie here.

I'm trying to trust Mr Jackson's choice after what he did with LOTR but I'm worried its going to be a real mess.

You all need to calm down, he spent years working on the story along with del Toro. The decision to make 3 movies was based on money, but Jackson is not a Hollywood mogul - he loves movies and loves Tolkien. I have complete trust in him and always have. Had any of you even heard of him before LOTR?

I saw a movie he did called Meet the Feebles on a crap VCR tape in like 1991 and even though it was a low budget, cheesy puppet movie I knew that he "got" the art of moviemaking and became a fan. When he got the nod to make LOTR I was insanely happy when other people were wondering why the guy who made "Frighteners" was chosen to tackle it.

From what it sounds like, it's 40% Hobbit, 60% Appendices and History of Middle Earth events. I'll be sporting wood from now until December regardless.
