I'm surprised no one has mentioned the different 3-4 looks we showed in Saturdays game

I didn't notice it when I rewatched the first half, I could always identify the four DL.

The first time they ran it was on the Texans first possession after they made a first down.

It was the play were CJ was chasing down Matt Schaub and he threw it away.

Video to follow for those of you in doubt.

This is interesting but not totally surprising. A lot ( I believe most) teams with a 4-3 base defense do not often line up in a 4-3 scheme. I read a statistic that last year the Panthers only lined up in a 4-3 around 45% of the time. I think some of this was due to the inability to find a healthy DT but cant be sure (sarcasm). Point is, I think we can use 3-4 formation and it is interesting to see what the results are but I don't think we are breaking any molds in doing so.

From my count we ran the 3-4 with our first team defense about 5 times.

Edwards was at the NT 3 out of the 5 times we ran it, and Fua was at NT the one time Edwards was on the sideline.

James Anderson lined up at one of the OLB spots each time we showed the 3-4 look, while Hardy & CJ rotated between DE and the other OLB spot, depending on what side JA lined up on.

We gave the below look 3 of 5 times, with one of them being on the goal line when Kuechly made the stop in the backfield.

James Anderson CJ/Edwards/Neblett Greg Hardy

Phillips/Kuechly

And here's the look we gave the other 2 times

Charles Johnson Neblett/Edwards/Hardy James Anderson

Phillips/Kuechly

I saw it run a few times on the goal line stuff.....on the play by Luke the personnel were:

Mcclain-RE

Fua-NT

Johnson-LE

Hardy-ROLB

Kuechely-R inside LB

Phillips-L inside LB

Anderson LOLB

They used it effectively on the goaline run play where Luke makes the stop.

Pretty sure Edwards and Fua were in there.

Just pulled up on preseason live, fast fowarded to the 2 goal line plays starting from inside the 5.

First was the Luke stuff with the personnel I mentioned earlier. 2nd was an incomplete pass with Hardy,Fua,Mcclain, and Johnson on the d-line in a nickel D, with Munnerlyn playing the slot.

Here you go!

It was actually 4 plays not 5, with the last one being some kind of offset 3-4 setup.

Video also posted in the OP.

That almost looks like we are playing in a 5-2 without a true nose tackle.

Are you talking about the last play? If so, with Godfrey in the box it resembles a 4-6 to me, but I know it's not.

No the first one, the only difference is that instead of a defensive end it's Anderson he drops into coverage once he realizes it's a pass.

These are actually some really cool formations, really intrigued to see how it works when we have our starters figured out.
