Assuming we are typical in so far as the evolution of intelligence and technology are concerned and can be used as a model of how other civilizations might grow. I would wager that many more civilizations are the engineers of their own destruction far more often than they fall prey to some cosmic event.

definitely. but over a significant time frame, they aren't all that uncommon (though not necessarilly cosmic in origin,) afterall, 98% (or so) of the species that existed on this planet are now extinct.

True enough, but if they were advanced enough they could prevent it... and like I said, just imagine a civilization similar to ours but even just 1,000 years older... they'd be pretty damned advanced compared to us.

You are assuming that all civilizations would advance in similar fashions. Very well could be extremely advanced life forms out there...but could also be just as likely that others are not as advanced

No one knows....maybe we will one day.

Or, we could even be the most advanced life firm in the galaxy.

If we are the best the universe has to offer then all hope is lost.

We might be babies, we might not, we could be cockroaches compared to others, or not. We might find out at some point, we might not. Developing intelligence does not mean we are 'more evolved' and is definitely not required for survival. It could actually be the worse thing that could happen to a species(or genus/family/whatever) or it could be the best thing. We are dumb and ignorant. We have known unknowns, unknown unknowns, unknown unknown unknowns, unknown unknown unknown unknowns, unknown unknown unknown unknown unknowns -> ∞.

that's what i meant by babies. i'm not speaking subjectively, i'm speaking objectively. we are really only beginning to understand how much we actually don't understand.

Well statistically you would expect that there are much more advanced species than us in the universe simply based upon the age of the universe and the period of that time which our species has been in existance.

If, for example, we have been around for 0.00000000000001% of the life of the universe.

If there were another species on another planet that had been in existance for 0.00000000000002% of the time since the universe sprang into being they would be much more advanced than we are now.
