Eastland Mall has been in the shitter since 1990

The city just bought it....they said that some movie studios have called with interest.

As Eastland’s slow decline accelerated last decade, the city began planning to remake the area at Central Avenue and North Sharon Amity Road. The first plan was for a mixed-use community of stores, offices and houses

I'm definitely better off than I was 4 years ago, but its not really a fair comparison for me because I was in school. In the last 3 years though, I've had 2 different jobs and 3 raises.

My parents are both better off though. My dad got moved to second shift against his will, but he's making more money and his company has reinstated 401k match.

My mom has gotten two promotions and interviewed for a fairly large promotion last week and is currently the favorite to get the job.

My brothers girlfriend has gotten a raise and a promotion both of the last two years.

My girlfriend has landed three great jobs with excellent companies. She quit each because a better opportunity came along and then she decided accounting sucks so she went back to school for a pre-vet program.

All of my friends that are worth a damn are doing well for themselves. There are a few that aren't, but they're exactly where I thought they'd be when we were in high school.

I routinely see HS friends on Facebook (that I rarely talk to anymore) getting married, buying homes, and getting jobs.

My household combined income (until my gf quit her job) was over $100,000, which I like to think is pretty solid for a 25 and 24 year old.

They should consolidate several schools into that building if the movie studio thing doesn't pan out.

There is already a bus station hub there. They could even eliminate school bus routes and just let kids take city buses to school to save even more money.

I'm not sure if they're going to be able to revitalize east independence. Pretty much starting at Sardis Rd....it's fugged. We've all seen it decline the past 10 or 12 years.

As far as the "revitalization" Same thing they're doing in Charleston. Trendy white businesses open in a poor area, driving property taxes up, then the poor gullah community who's houses were grandfathered to them are forced to relocate because of the higher property taxes. Looks like the area's getting better, but really you've just displaced the poor. Out of sight, out of mind. Till you have to run an errand in North Charleston.

This is the same thing they're going to do there. It's not fixing people lives, it's just hiding the poor.

That said it's on us the individual to fix our own lives, it's more of a matter of having an opportunity provided.

The Republicans are a party of fear mongering and their rallying cry is nationalism at its worst.

Gays, Illegals, Terrorists, and Taxing the Rich are evil and must be stopped at all costs....revolution baby.

I wish we could leverage the internet and move schools to am more of an online format.

So now the problem is more businesses opening and more property taxes to collect?

There are always going to be poor and hopefully programs that help support them. Not sure why collecting more money is a problem.

See, there is where the big difference is between what you believe and what I believe.

I believe that we should have programs to "assist" them....to help them get back on their feet.

You believe that we should have programs to "support them"....and that is exactly what we have. Programs that provide a complete means of support for their entire lives....and their kids' lives.

Generational welfare is the problem. And thanks to Obama, any incentive to work was given the wink/nod.
