Cam isn't even close to being mature yet. He still has a lot to learn about the game. Giving him a C would be a counter-intuitive way of making him grow up. It would probably backfire. Nothing worse than a kid who thinks he's accomplished/learned enough already. You must spoil your kids. Plus, we're talking about Smitty.

why bring maturity into this....when was the last time Smith had 2 back to back "mature" seasons.

LOL, you equate me personally thinking the best player should get a C to mean I spoil my son?

If you have followed Cam....a patch isn't going to spoil him or make him think he has arrived.

No need to get panties in a bunch. I said I get it....just my personal preference was a little different. Only on the huddle will a tiny comment be viewed as the ultimate insult.

Team captains are not about who is the best athlete on the team....or who is more irreplacable on teh team. Team captains are typically the elder statesmen on the team that helps the team keep its focus....keeps the locker room at peace...etc. You need those guys that have been aroudn and udnerstand what it takes in the NFL for multiple seasons....not typically a rookie.

I didn't realize Cam was a rookie?

Why was Beason a captain in 2008?

Like I said, no biggie....that would have just been my preference.

Did you completely misinterpret the tone of my post? You must have. Read it again. This time don't picture the imaginary capslock (and ignore my avatar lol). Good lord, man. I thought we were just having a discussion here.

Can't we all agree that we have more Captain-worthy players than we have badges to hand out? I have no problem with the choices, and I can bet that Cam looks up to and respects Steve Smith and Jordan Gross a hell of a lot more than the other way around. Not that the vets don't respect Cam, I believe they do because he is humble, but Cam has made it clear how much he looks up to the elder statesmen who have proven their worth in this league for many years.

Maybe Cam can be hall monitor or line leader if people feel he needs an accolade, but to be serious, Cam is a sharp individual and knows where his bread is buttered - the offensive line and his perennial pro bowl WR.

My bad. It just seems like every little thing I say people want to bounce on....I probably did read that under the assumption you had a little more in it.

You think giving Cam a "C" will help him become the leader that he should have been last season, but I think it will only stunt his growth as a player and leader. You never know the impact of telling a young player that "he's already proven enough" to be the "official" leader of the team. It can make him stronger (with Cam, this is very possible, no doubt) or it can make him spoiled, impatient, and stubborn. I wouldn't risk it.

Cam isn't an ordinary 2nd year player, I know. He can very well make the most of the opportunity, but he's the kind of player who's smart enough to know this is a locker room that respects their veterans and that he doesn't need a patch to lead this team anyways. Him not getting a patch doesn't make him think the team wants to downplay his presence as a leader. He's not the kind of dumb player you'd find on other teams who thinks his squad slapped him in the face for not giving him a patch and is already talking to his agent about getting out of town when his contract is up.

I actually prefer this idea of showing Cam he still has plenty more to prove before he can earn a patch. I think this will only serve to fire him up this season while making sure he still respects the veteran talent on the team.

How many years have Smitty and Gross been captains now, at least two for both of them? It was always gonna be hard to take it off one of them and give it to Cam.

The players vote on the Captains. Therefore, whomever received a patch is EXACTLY the right person(s) to have received it.

Cam loves his o-linemen. Hell, he probably voted for Gross as a captain.
