ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Robert Griffin III is the first rookie quarterback to win an offensive player of the week award after his debut game.

The NFL announced Wednesday that Griffin is the NFC offensive player of the week for his performance in the Washington Redskins' 40-32 win over the New Orleans Saints*.

The No. 2 overall draft pick completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's victory - making him the first player in league history to amass 300-plus yards passing, two or more passing touchdowns and no interceptions in an NFL debut.

Griffin is also the first rookie quarterback to throw for at least 300 yards and win a season opener.

The league started giving the player of the week awards in 1984.

Not Rookie of the week, but Player of the week :) :)

Probably not after costing his team the game with a dumb unsportsmanlike conduct.

Rams are legit, Fisher knows how to ball.

Probably not after costing his team the game with a dumb unsportsmanlike conduct.

Griffin got an unsportsmanlike?

That wasnt RG3, that was #15 Morgan who threw the football and got the penalty. Rg3 had a good game, but the Redskins are still the Redskins.

Man doesn't it suck when your star player does everything he can but the TEAM makes mistakes that cost games...that situation seems oddly familiar and I don't know why...hmmmmm

They lost though so its rg3s fault no ifs ands or buts about it :)

griffin played his ass off but the team around him wasn't up to the task in the end.

that sounds familiar but i can't quite put my finger on it

now they've lost two of their top defensive stars very early which could conceivably put even more pressure on their rookie quarterback to carry the team.

oh so grits left the site huh.

that means it'll probably be until the next panthers loss when we see a mysterious new poster with a corn-based username who's really high on robert griffin.

Hi, my name is tOrTiLla and my favorite team is not the one this site is based upon, but I thought I'd sign up anyway to point out your team's flaws and short-comings, all while feigning support as cleverly disguised baiting to antagonize other members. That's pretty much my life.

amirite?
