How can you do that if you're not used to passing on normal plays?

I am not exactly sure what you mean by that, because we pass on a lot of normal plays. Its the runs that are weird.

Cam's accuracy on medium and long throws seems to be just as good as it was last year. He was throwing strikes on anything longer than 10-15 yards the last couple of games, so the read option doesn't seem to be impacting his play in that regard. Most of his recent mistakes have come on the short stuff, and imo thats more of a concentration/focus problem than anything. And that is why I think it will get better with age and experience.

Now there are some times when he holds on to the ball to long, and that could be lack of experience. Or it could be the plays, or that receivers are not getting open, or some combination of the three.

As far as I can tell only two people are resistant to reverting to last years offensive scheme, the OC and HC.

Either way, I never thought it would come to this, but I will watch the game Sunday with a note pad and pen, tracking all plays (run vs pass) and also keeping up with the formations used. Why, I have no idea. For score-keeping at home, is it considered a read option play if there is a play action fake with an option look but Cam ends up throwing a pass, or would it only apply to running plays?

I can't do that on game day. Too much happens too fast to accurately keep track of everything. However, that night or the next day, I rewatch and often chart the plays. If it helps, here's what I do:

Shotgun or under center?
If under center, is it an I-formation or empty backfield
Pass or run, and if it's a pass, was a play fake used
For shotgun runs, was it read option or a typical (for the rest of the league, not us) shotgun handoff
Who was the pass to or who ran the ball
Yards gained
1st downs gained

2. So what's wrong with Panthers quarterback Cam Newton? That's one of the most-asked questions in the league today. After studying his game against the Cowboys, there are several things wrong. It starts with the design of the offense. The read-option principles help Newton make plays with his legs, but I see it hurting his fundamentals. His footwork has regressed. He threw too much off-balance against the Cowboys and it hurt his accuracy. The Panthers needs to just let him play quarterback. He also had some key drops, two of the five linemen struggled in front of him and he failed to hit on a few shots. I will say this: He looked much more comfortable when he played a more conventional style of offense in this game. It might be time to ditch that read-option and let him become a pocket passer.


The pictures below are an example of Newton's poor mechanics costing him a big play.


Newton has running back Mike Tolbert wide open in the middle of the field. But take a look at Newton's balance as he threw. There was none. He looked awkward and he didn't seem to follow through. His pass sailed. As you can see in the second picture, the ball was high and outside and Tolbert couldn't pull it in. This is a throw that all good quarterbacks have to hit. But I believe the read-option garbage the Panthers run is bringing on bad habits for Newton. The mechanics of the position are not what they should be for him, which is why his accuracy isn't as good as it should be.

How could our coaches be this Fugging Stupid! How can they not see what is so obvious? How can they continue to NOT adjust to this? Unbelievable. Rivera is a sack of poo.

I have liked Rivera but if he does not stop Chud from using the read option then it is time for the next man up.

I bet he is so smug after that prediction. For many reasons I hope we can win at least 7 games this season (long shot, I know) and his prediction is one of them.
