The new GM and new coach in 2013 need to sit Cam behind a vet QB

Mentally, Cam Newton is about as weak right now as I've ever seen any quarterback ever. He's in mental shambles. I think the one chance to save his career in Carolina is to sign or trade for a veteran QB in 2013 that Cam can sit behind. I think this would have been best for him all along, get some of these crushingly high expectations off of him for a second and just let the guy regain his composure so he can FINALLY learn proper footwork, FINALLY learn how to pass inside the 10, FINALLY learn how to pick up a key first down or touchdown through the air late in the 4th quarter. Every time he has to go out there and learn on the fly, it's stacking up even more pressure on him when he fails time and time again.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but whatever. Thoughts?

Okay, what actual reason do you have to believe that he WILL indeed get that "poo" together? Just blind faith.

Again, the read option has made Cam regress. It will be a little while before he can get back to his 2011 form. Chud is still calling too many shotgun plays btw also.

Yeah because finding a vet and pretty much benching Cam is really gonna help his mental state. He is our cornerstone, he's the man we're moving forward with.

I love your posts SMF....but, cam played great today. Minus his goal line fumble, those two ints were a result of a slip, and Olsen not running to the ball/great defensive play..

All of you with Cam pics in your forum signatures maybe aren't the most unbiased observers. If you're going to sit here and tell me Cam Newton is a good starter in this league right now, you are flat out mistaken. If you have a quarterback playing well, you absolutely aren't 1-6 in the league of 2012 no matter how bad the rest of your team is.

Did the Giants do this to Eli when he was struggling in his young career?

Please explain to me how having another quarterback in the game today (or any other game previously this season) would help this team? Cam will either get better with time or fold. Either way right now I think his performance is pretty fuging solid, especially when our offense isn't based around the option nonsense.

Bench your franchise QB after he's been starting for 2 years? I'm sure that will do fuging wonders for his mental state.

You are if you have Chud as your OC. You probably aren't unbiased either if you don't see that.

The man isn't playing like the 2009 Jake Delhomme or the 2010 Jimmy Clausen. No, he hasn't been as good as he was last year but he hasn't been horrible either. He's 23 years old and he has a history of leading his team to championships. If you surround the kid, yes kid, with some more talent, then there is absolutely no reason to believe that he will not succeed.

Was he able to throw inside the 10? Pick up first downs or touchdowns when he needed to through the air? Pretty sure that final drive we had was him using his legs along with the running backs unless I'm mistaken which was a good strategy because there was no way in hell Cam was picking up the downs he needed that late in the game.

I'm not crazy right? Cam Newton is the worst quarterback in football with 5 minutes left in games and inside the 10 yard line at any point in the game. Right? In those instances, he becomes worse than Clausen when throwing. His runs have saved him at times, but he can't pick up what he has to in those important scenarios to save his life right now.

I respectfully disagree with the OP.

The first time this "vet QB" throws a pick at home, how long does it take for the "We Want Cam" chants to start? You drafted Cam as a high-risk, high-reward prospect and showed faith by starting him from day one. You don't go back now.

Valid concerns on his footwork and short field passing. I also think he's not in a good place mentally right now. Disagree on benching him, which wouldn't help anyone. You couldn't get a good starter in knowing Newton was breathing down his neck from the beginning and anyone else we brought in Newton would beat for the job outright. Plus you'd probably do more to hurt his confidence in doing so.

He did drive us down the field to take the lead, getting several first downs and making several completions along the way. You'd need to bench the coaching and defense for giving up the lead.

Guys are open time and time again late in games and inside the 10 and Cam is just missing them in those spots about as badly as one can miss. Seriously Clausen-esque.
