Why is Rivera failing as a head coach?

57 posts in this topic

Im gonna have to argue that if we had the players we would be winning these games. When you have a lack of talent it magnifies coaching mistakes. If we had the playmakers to make instinctual plays instead of always needing to coach these guys up the coaches would be in a better position to call more aggressively.

The NFL doesn't work like Madden does, sorry. Coaching is everything. Especially when it comes down to young players. Offensively, we are CALLING THE WRONG PLAYS. It wouldn't matter if you had Rogers, McCoy, Percy Harvin, and Victor Cruz out there, they wouldn't succeed under our coaching/calling.

You guys overrate the poo out of defense that has no signature wins and still has not proven it can protect leads late. You're settling just so you can act like our defense is carrying us.

...so, tell me about those signature wins from the offense, the clutch reads, throws, catches, runs, blocks.

No offense to everyone; but, this entire team is overrated.

The Panthers are what their records says they are and it really does not matter the reason anymore.

IMHO at season end, if the Panthers are not at least 6-10 again during the easier part of their schedule that is all that is needed to be known.

The new GM and the advisors will evaluate everyone: coaches, deffense, Newton, Smith the RBs, the OL and if they need to blow it and start over, I'm fine with it.

It is not working. It hasn't for a long time.

At least they have not quit, not yet anyway.

Dirty Sanchez will be gone at the end of the year anyway. He couldn't get the job done, it's on him.

Don't ever make the mistake of comparing my opinions to the madden universe. I don't even play that poo. If you think this team has enough talent, then I've got bridge in LA I'd like to sell you. Your arguement is illogical. Not to say we don't need an adjustment to the coaching staff because we do, I'm just saying these coaches could do a little better if they had more talent to work with. Now please tell me some more about madden.

Honestly, I don't think that the team is built for the way that Chud wants to run his O.

He is trying to run a version of the Coryell offense, but without some of the player to do so.

Chud is guilty of abandoning the run, but is it effective even before he looks the other way.

Are our players committed enough to know the playbook inside and out? And if they are, do we have to talent to make it all "click"? I personally think that we are just devoid of talent right now, and are overpaying guys that we shouldn't be.

We need DL and OL like you wouldn't believe, and a WR that can run this system.

League is evolving.....college looks ARE IMO the way the league is going. Look at the big Coryell guys of recent times....Norv (he is sputtering), Martz (got laughed). Most of the other big name Coryell guys are now gone.

Now when I say college looks are the way the league is going I am not talking about teams being full time triple option schemes. But lots of current teams are running variations of the college spread offense (Green Bay, New England, Saints, etc).

I don't think the read option being part of your offense is wrong....I expect more teams to use it over the next decade. Problem this year is Chud got lazy and relied too much on it and ran it greedily. Also worked away from the important role the TEs played in it last year (not only having 2 rec options but added blockers as well). I think the 3 WR sets imploded things more than the read option itself.

So every game has to be a close down to the wire type victory? Its OK to blow teams out and win handily. Unfortunately in Carolina, "coming close" is almost as good as a win. There was a time when Carolina occasionally beat teams down, could win games before 2 minutes in the 4th, and had a defense that could close out games. We havent seen that very much if at all in the Rivera Era. This team cant BEAT anybody, and relies on attempting to squeek out games every week. You guys overrate the poo out of defense that has no signature wins and still has not proven it can protect leads late. You're settling just so you can act like our defense is carrying us.

Dude, I'm not trying to say anything.

i said what i said. Don't try to read anything into it.

We've been in every game excluding the NYG with a chance to win.

Someone needs to step up and make a play......at "crunch" time.

You don't come across as anything more than a casual fan of football so i figured you didn't really know how the game works. Our talent is fine enough to be winning more than one game. The rest falls on coaching, i don't understand how you fail to see that. Atl, Dal, Sea, and now Chi losses all fall on coaching shoulders.. Yea Cam fugged up a few throws, and receivers didnt catch balls they could have, but the fact of the matter is we should have never been in positions where those certain plays mattered. Our coaches seem unintelligent which transposes to our young players who haven't built up the rep to blatantly ignore a coaching call that seems irrational.

We need more experience at every level on this team... next HC needs to be an experienced college/pro HC

I think you hit the nail on the head with the inexperienced angle. Rivera is a first time coach. Half way through his second year. I can't think of many head coaches that came in and turned around a bad team in one or two years. It takes time.

I also think Rivera will get next year. He is building a team damm near from scratch. He has done well, not well enough for most folks, but well. If we continue to fight and even eke out some wins. I believe he will at least get next year to see if he can finish the job.
