In a recent interview on Democracy Now! ex-Princeton professor and frequent Obama critic Dr. Cornel West lashed out against the president as well as pundits Michael Eric Dyson, Melissa Harris-Perry and Rev. Al Sharpton.

West called Obama a “Rockefeller Republican in blackface” and said Dyson, Harris-Perry and Sharpton were all “for sale.”

West, along with TV personality Tavis Smiley, has been one of President Barack Obama’s loudest and harshest African-American critics. Although West endorsed and campaigned for Obama during the 2008 campaign he has since complained that the first black president turned his back on impoverished Americans.

In May, West called Obama a “disastrous response to a catastrophe” and he was rumored to be behinds efforts to mount a third party campaign to challenge the president from the left.

West has been criticized himself for the personal nature of many of his attacks on the president. He has questioned Obama’s racial authenticity on numerous occasions.

This is also not the first time West has publicly rebuked former colleagues.

In February West called Harris-Perry a “liar” and said that, ”[s]he’s become the momentary darling of liberals, but I pray for her because she’s in over her head. She’s a fake and a fraud. I was so surprised how treacherous the sister was.”

West’s biggest beef with the Obama administration is that he believes it is not concerned enough with the plight of the poor. “We all have gangster proclivities,” he joked, but says that Wall Street personnel acting on those proclivities is what caused the economic crisis. And since he believes that the Obama administration is “in the shadow of Wall Street,” and perhaps part of the greedy “age of Reagan,” the poor will not receive the attention they need unless something changes.

When asked how his criticism of Obama was different from attacks by Fox news, West responded by saying that Obama was a “mascot” and a “puppet,” but still a human being who should not be called a “socialist” because he is “very much an extension of the corporate state that has been squeezing out the juices of our democracy.

I have always loved Dr. West. He is just flat out awesome. Represents the best of Christianity IMO. I'm curious as to who he voted for though... I listened to a few podcasts from Smiley & West earlier in the year and I remember he said he liked Ron Paul but "the brother seems so anti-government," it's scary, or something along those lines.

speaking of o'reilly. i think he is supposed to team up with tavis and cornell with what they are trying to do for the poor. how we treat the poor says the most about our society.

I disagree with what he says but I would defend to minor discomfort his right to say it.

He does have a point, honestly, but that kind of gets lost in the blustering to me. I have the same issue with Obama that West does, but the manner he attacks makes me more inclined to back away from him and into Obama's corner instead of considering what West says.

i don't get this

the left is basically non-existent in american politics so i have no problem with an intense leftist saying inflammatory things; it's the only way he's going to be heard. also it beats the hell out of the president tactfully treating things like PPACA and his insistence to cut social programs as some sort of victory for the left

It's probably just my aversion to religious nuts, and the unnecessary 'blackface' comment. i don't really like West, is all.
