anytime after that where we were a few bucks short for any endeavor, somebody would just say, dollar wallet? and one of us would crack open our wallet and bam.
a few weeks ago i did this while in need of gas. i had 37 in cash on me while not having my debit card.
ever so often i will get a text or voicemail from a bud who goes man, i had the best dollar wallet moment the other day. haha

Seriously, I did find $20 on a floor in a Men's room 12 years ago.
I bought a large collection of Lionel Train boxcars about 4-5 years ago for $700. I decided to sell them off one at a time. I was going through and photographing each one of them and found $200 stuffed inside of one.

in Canada you know, we have the one and two dollar coins...know as the loonie and the twoonie. This act of throwing your change in the jar really adds up quick with those in there! My wife and I spent a week all inclusive in Mexico just on a few months of her tips going in the jar when she was still working as a waitress.
One Summmr after my Sister got divorced, she was out of money. (In Indiana, Teachers can have their check spread over 9 months or 12. Because she was married at the time, she had chosen 9 months)
So she got a job as a waitress as an upscale place near a golf course.
She nocticed 2 things. Tips got better as soon as she took off her wedding ring and as her skirts got shorter, her tips got bigger! She made it thru the entire Summer on her tips. In fact, she took a pay cut going back to teaching!
Of course, it didn't hurt that my sister has rather large, assests!

There is some website that locates money that may be owed to you but foget what it is called. Think it may have been posted on this site a couple years ago. Anyway I decided to give it a shot and there was $350 from an old insurance company I used years ago that was owed to me. Had a check mailed to me a week or so later.
This....
When companies have 3rd party companies administer their bill payments or other financial dealings, they have to turn over unclaimed money to the state. I did the same thig a few years back in NC and they had a couple insurance premiums I'd paid and were held when the wife and I got married and combined our insurance policies. It was about $450.
Now I make it a habit to check for my wife and I both about once a year...

Do these companies cost money to search for you?

We only changed our address for important bill, etc...
We did not alert our old mortgage company that we moved.
Anyway, about a month after we were in our new house, we got a letter from our mortgage company. Thinking it was just another statement, I almost just put it in the shredder. Well I opened it, it was a check for $2400....what was left in our escrow. We had no idea that we were owned that money.
It also had been forwarded twice, so it was a miracle it even made it to our house!

No, they are run by the state. What happens is this.....
Most utility companies, banks, credit unions, insurance companies- basically anyone you pay money to as a bill or premium- use a third party to adminster their financial dealings. If the third party is not able to deliver a refund check, premium return or an over-charge amount due to you, they have to turn that money over to the unclaimed property part of the state government, otherwise they become liable for it- the last thing they want to do.
Simply google: "unclaimed property North Carolina" or wherever you live. Most of the time the only information the site uses to search is a name and address. If you lived in several different places, you may have to search each individually.
