Its not really a big thing except maybe 10 or 15 years down the road. China bought that hulk of a ship to fast track their carrier production they just have to figure out the engines. Still trying to understand russian tech 22 years later........ gotta be a joke in there somewhere. That said after they figure this boat out they plan on building a fleet of em complete with upgraded migs. Thats when things get weird as you could see chinese carriers patroling off US waters and migs in strike range of us cities. I am hoping the engines are written in cypher in russain and only run on high grade vodaka with secrets know only to the ninja.

The funny thing is russia is PISSED the chinese wont share their ju-15 designs with anyone. Russia has the carrier and china has tthe planes.

Russia has never been that into power projection. Their Navy has for the most part been designed for coastal/regional defense, SSBNs notwithstanding. Brazil has a lot of maritime area to secure. The Thai carrier is a joke, as there is something like one plane that can operate from it.

Captain Ramius:We will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills.

I doubt the Chinese are doing this in an attempt to catch up with the United States. That might be the eventual goal, but the immediate goal is to be the baddest kid on their own block. This is more about regional rivalries with South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, and control of islands and key maritime chokepoints around their own area.

China wants the South China Sea to be theirs and theirs alone.

As the polar ice continues to melt, get ready for some heated naval engagements to establish who controls those new shipping lanes, though.
