being open on thanksgiving isn't necessary. for example: costco. none of these retailers will suffer if they are closed on thanksgiving.

Indeed.

Protest them by not shopping there.

That's a whole different discussion.

Your opinion of whether the establishment should or should not be open is irrelevant. They are open, so the employees must work. If they don't want to work, ask for time off, or work somewhere else.

Working on Thanksgiving is not a working condition, it is a work requirement. Again, do you not see that?

was this the case when unions fought for, and earned, the 5 day work week?

that's about as effective as protesting the election by voting for gary johnson

Welp kid, you can do that and you you can rant and rave on this forum. Those are your options, mostly.

You seem like the chain yourself to a tree type.

Next Turkey day, make a chain barrier and chain yourself to it preventing Walmart from using one of their main entrances.

Perhaps this statement will stop the atrocities of having to go to work on a Holiday.

the only options are not shopping there (this is entirely ineffective), and posting on the internet?

huh did the government and unions cease to exist overnight or something?

You think the Federal Government should find a way to stop Retailers from being open on Holidays ?

Wait a second, have you ever worked in retail? or a part time job ?

Unions negotiating with corporations for a five day work week is one thing... unions could negotiate with corporations about holidays (and they have)... it's irrelevant to the discussion.

Are you suggesting that the gov't require certain business to not be open on holidays?

you must have missed the post showing that the US is literally the only OECD country that doesn't legally entitle employees to paid holidays (or paid leave)

i would be far more receptive to min wage employees working holidays if they were entitled paid leave to celebrate their holidays on some other arbitrary day

OK, so how does this work for jobs that have to be done on holidays? The aforementioned factory jobs, etc?

You don't think retail stores should be open on holidays right? What other establishments shouldn't be open? Restaurants? Bars? Gas Stations? Hospitals? Service companies with project deadlines?

Who decides?

i edited that post while you were replying

I see that... and I agree mostly, but the chances of min wage employees getting paid leave, unless the gov't requires it is pretty much nil. Not saying it's right, it just is.

I suspect what happened in the case of Walmart, (and I'm speculating, so if someone knows, inform me) that Walmart requires the employees be there on the holiday, and then makes them take other time off during that week so as not to exceed their 30 hour limit. No?

Obviously it's not "paid leave" but it's equivalent leave... and it is to Walmart's benefit but it is leave.

For the record, I have no problem with what you're suggesting in regards to paid leave, but it won't happen... too many greedy companies and open hands in DC.

If only these stories of disgruntled working forces and customer trampling frenzies became more prevalent in the media than ZOMG 5 DOLLAR BOAT SHOES the entire concept of black friday would fade into an abyss of nothingness.
