important part of directing imo

understanding the pieces you need to create your story is the most important job of the director...

that said, editing is what makes film. it's the only discipline that's unique to moving pictures... and is arguably the most important single discipline.

I didn't realize how true this was until a year ago. It's not nearly as easy or seamless as they make it appear when you watch a finished project.

if nobody notices your work... as an editor, you did a stellar job.

My 16 y.o. is getting into this stuff... it's apparently what he wants to do as well.

He and some fellow students made a short film for his english class a few weeks ago, and it turned out pretty good I thought, esp for a bunch of kids with essentially no experience with it.

He's got the Adobe CS6 suite on his Macbook and has been working in that for about 3 months now...

I'm interested in what anyone has to say about particular schools for film studies.

You're in luck. UNCW has a film studies program!

Yes. He is considering the dub. Is it a good program?

NYU.

He has also mentioned this.

less important than formal training is connections and work ethic. the long and short of it is that if he wants to work in film/tv, after school he needs to be in a place where film/tv exists as a full-time industry so he can make connections.
