Transgender player attains college basketball first

6 posts in this topic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The women’s basketball team at Mission College expected the bleachers to be full and the hecklers ready when its newest player made her home court debut.

In the days leading up to the game, people had plenty to say about 6-foot-6-inch, 220-pound Gabrielle Ludwig, who joined the Lady Saints as a mid-season walk-on and became, according to advocates, the first transsexual to play college hoops as both a man and a woman.

Coach Corey Cafferata worried the outside noise was getting to his players, particularly the 50-year-old Ludwig.

A pair of ESPN radio hosts had laughed at her looks, referring to her as “it.” And online threats and anonymous calls prompted the two-year college to assign the Navy veteran of Operation Desert Storm a safer parking space next to the gym and two police guards.

Last week, Ludwig gathered her 10 teammates at practice and offered to quit. This was their time to shine, she told the group of 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds. She didn’t want to be a distraction for the team. The other women said if Ludwig, whom they nicknamed “Big Sexy” and “Princess,” didn’t play, they wouldn’t either.

Cool story. I doubt any good discussion will come out of this. Just more "it" insults

Those jerseys are nice. Good comeback story regardless of the transgender angle... I will say this, she was better off as a man, I'm just sayin',

Regarding the eligibility/level of play, I posted this in the other thread in the tinderbox about it:

The AP should've done some fact checking before trying to sensationalize this... If she/he is playing at a JUCO, they don't abide by NCAA bylaws.

According to the NJCAA, a player can play their two years at any time, as she/he is doing. You could play one year at 18 and if you still have another year left, you can play again when you're 50.

If you're talking NCAA and their stupid, useless rules... Then she would've been ineligible to play long ago. According to NCAA laws, you have 8 or 9 semesters to play, and the clock starts counting as soon as you start college - community college or university. So by NCAA rules, she wouldn't have been eligible to play now - regardless of the sex change if I'm not mistaken, b/c she is still the same person.

From what I read, she is playing at a community college, not a university, so they are under NJCAA jurisdiction.

Still, probably the first transgender to do such a thing, and it is still college basketball, but I think the AP is overstating the facts.

I know the eligibility rules, I learned the hard way, lol.

    • Don't see this happening, G-man has said on several occasions that he thinks this is a loaded draft and we're going to get a really good player at # 8.

    • I know I'm just being a twat but I do think that when I eat meat. I try not to eat processed meat or much meat in general and see some hypocrisy in the treatment if animals but I don't take it overboard.

    • I was being sarcastic, but it is what will likely happen, sadly.    Hornets Checklist Recently: White [ ] Tall [ ] No Post Game [ ] Plays No Defense [ ]   If they pass all of these then they can become our pick or we can trade for them. This is a great draft class, and somehow I still believe the Hornets will end up like the picture below:   If they actually do the right thing and fire Rich Cho then maybe they have a chance of making better decisions in the draft.
