The two may be issues. But they really have nothing to go with each other.
Read a stat in the Charlotte Observer last week that was interesting. The states with the fewest gun homicides and suicides (by a large margin) are not those with tough gun laws, but are those with strong mental commitment laws.

hmm... i can believe that. but if gun control is an issue (or lack thereof) and mental health is an issue as well, then doesn't the lack of gun control combined with mentally unstable persons create a potential hazard?
i don't think you can address just one. there has to be some sort of balance
