The two may be issues. But they really have nothing to go with each other.

Read a stat in the Charlotte Observer last week that was interesting. The states with the fewest gun homicides and suicides (by a large margin) are not those with tough gun laws, but are those with strong mental commitment laws.


I would love to get my hands on these stats to play around with.

Here is another variable:

Racial homogeneity of geographic areas
Studies have examined if ethnic/racially heterogeneous areas, most often neighborhoods in large cities, have higher crime rates than more homogeneous areas. Most studies find that the more ethnically/racially heterogeneous an area is, the higher its crime rates tend to be.
