Of course he did an okay job. He hasn't had to do anything yet. No big contracts have been negotiated. He hasn't had to run a draft. He hasn't had to cut players to get under the cap. All he's had to do is show up.

I think you're missing my point. I never said I wanted Beane but all I was saying was that he has the edge AT THE MOMENT due to the fact that Richardson knows what he has done and knows what he will do. He will interview other candidates and more-than-likely see that there are other variable candidates outside of Beane.

While I understand what you are saying, I am not seeing where the blame falls on Richardson for this. First you say it'd be messed up to get rid of Rivera. Then you say if Rivera stays it'll be pointless because he'll likely get let go anyway. Which makes no sense anyway because you act like we're going to be getting rid of every single player on this team or something. If we get rid of Williams and Gamble (because those are the only two solid players that would help us remotely to release; we're not getting rid of Beason if that is what you are thinking, cutting him would hurt us and nobody is going to trade for him), I honestly don't see how that makes us any worse. We'd still have Stew, Tolbert, and Cam as options in the running game. And we didn't have Gamble all this year and did just fine. Plus we have the draft.

And really? Comparing it to the Fox situation? Come on now. We went 2-14 that season not because we weren't talented. We were. That is why we have been much more competitive since. Hell, we were pretty competitive when Matt Moore actually started that year despite his mistakes. Some people really forget how awful Clausen was as a QB. There is no way we're going to do as bad as we did in 2010 with Cam at QB. If we did, that would be saying a hell of a lot more about Rivera than anything.

And then you say he won't start over with a clean slate. Why do people keep assuming stuff? Lets at least let the situation play itself out.

At the end of the day, people overreact every single year. Our cap is going to be fine. It's always said every year "Carolina is in huge cap trouble" and alas, what happens? We'll restructure, we'll make the proper releases, etc. Besides, it isn't like we need that much money available this offseason anyway. We have nobody to re-sign and there is nobody in FA that would be that expensive to sign.

TV actually makes a pretty valid point. The cap is going to make things rougher next year (Thanks a lot, Marty).

That said, Rivera has shown the ability to coach the team under less than optimal circumstances (i.e. half the roster injured) so we'll see what happens next season.

I'd add that other teams have shown it is possible to field a competitive team even when you're not breaking the bank.

The buzz on favorites for GM jobs: Keim (AZ); Raye (SD); Gamble (Jets); Caldwell (Jax); Beane/Gettleman (Car); Dorsey (KC) ... CLE uncertain

Retweeted by Joe Person

This doesn't look accurate tbh, but if it is it looks like Ross is the Rivera of GM candidates with a ton of interest but no job. Always the bridesmaid...

I know you weren't endorsing Beane, and perhaps I was just pointing out the obvious. But the reality is JR can't know what Beane will do with things like the draft and contract negotiation because he has never done any of these things before.

It is just mind boggling to me that this guy is even a candidate.

Things starting to shake out on the GM front a bit.

Rich Cimini@RichCimini

Tom Gamble turned down second interview with Jags to focus on#Jets GM job, per @AdamSchefter. Jax leaning toward Dave Caldwell.

Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter

Jacksonville’s two GM finalists are Falcons director of player personnel Dave Caldwell and Cardinals director of player personal Steve Keim.

Noticed that too.

My conspiracy theory is that Ross ends up back in New York with a promotion to assistant GM. Kevin Abrams is forced out and joins Gettleman as a cap manager in Carolina.

I'm probably dreaming there, but that'd be a great combination.

If not Abrams, Mike Tannenbaum had a good rep as a cap manager before the Sanchez deal. He might be worth a look as a cap man only (no say in personnel at all).

I'm also intrigued by a Gettleman/Beane combo. I think Beane has a little more experience than he's being given credit for. Enough so that he would be helpful as a righthand man to a veteran like Gettleman. Have we ever had an heir apparent like that?

yes. marty hurney.

Caldwell is expected to get the Jaguars job, Gamble is expected to get the Jets GM spot. I'd expect that Gettleman gets the Panther's GM spot. KC's GM spot is either going to Dorsey or Heckart.

That leaves SD, Arizona and CLE.

Arizona is expected to promote Keim once all the GM mess is over. SD is said to prefer Telesco if they go outside the team. "Still expect Raye to get the GM spot"

So that leaves CLE and no one knows what they are doing till everything is squared away with Kelly.

Ross' best chance is here in Carolina and it seems he may be in last place if he wants his own coach.

I could see Beane/Gettlman both being here together. "Cap" guy and a "scouting" guy. Might actually be better that way. Two heads are better than one.
