how can anyone look at past trends of this team an ridicule anyone for assuming we're likely to sit around on our hands and do something dumb

Because over the past year, they've done some things that no one believed they would (i.e. firing Hurney, hiring a consultant).
At least for the moment, there's more evidence that things are not status quo than there is that they are.
