What would be wrong with "smart gun" legislation?

If it makes it more safe for everyone, who cares about the price?

If I can't afford to buy a gun, it is not making it safer for me.

Anyone who thinks that they could ever produce a "smart weapon" that would prevent unauthorized use while making the weapon as reliable and available to the owner is a fool.

What if my wife needs to use it?

What if I need to use it with my off hand?

What if I'm wearing a glove?

What if my hand is bloodied or covered in mud and I need it?

How do you transfer ownership without creating a system that is secure without being prone to abuse?

How do you propose to retrofit all of the weapons in homes today?

Its bullshit SciFi to even think about it...

So if it was not price prohibitive you would be OK with it?

The issue gun rights folks have is that it could ruin the secondary market/ private gun shows.

I can understand that argument.

As long as I could still reasonably purchase and fire on demand without delay a firearm I could be ok with it.

Just leads into reliability issues IMO.

Except it basically already exists

There is lots of different bio-metric technology out there

There is no reason you can't have more than 1 user. Biometrics can be used with gloves and dirty hands.

I haven't thought about the transfer issue

Rather than identifying something fixed, like a fingerprint, a "dynamic" biometric system measures changes over time. As it turns out, the way you grip a gun—all the little changes in pressure as you squeeze the trigger—creates a pattern that's unique to you. What's more, the pattern is consistent: it can be identified even if you're tired, wearing gloves, or even if your hand is injured. (It turns out that your signature works in a similar way: the changes in pressure over time as you put pen to paper are far more consistent and recognizable than the way your signature actually looks.)

If I can't afford to buy a gun, it is not making it safer for me.

The constitution allows someone the right to own a gun, not afford it.

If they came out with technology that could prevent homicides and mass shootings but drove the price up, so what?

fug Del, when did this march into 2nd Amend ?

We were talking about what would be "wrong" with this type of Legislation.

I said why I didn't like it.

I did not mention the 2nd.

If every car had a breath-a-lyzer on the steering wheel but cars went up 20K each, so what ?

Now let me post for you so we can avoid this fuging circle jerk.

"BUT CARS DON'T MURDER BABIES YOU GUN NUT"

Then I go into how guns are inanimate objects, you post some graph from EuroForever.org, I roll my eyes and make some half assed retort and we start over in another thread.

Does that about cover it ?

Don't put electronic systems in my firearms...

What happens when the electronic componets get fried by an EMP of some origin?

How do you power said electrical safety?

Delhommey is starting to sound like someone in the medical field... Jacking up prices just because nobody is guaranteed the right to healthcare and if you want/need it you're going to have to pay what we say pay... Oh, you want to make it so everyone can get healthcare? Well we'll just keep raising the prices until we bleed folks dry!

Just goes to show gun availability trumps gun safety.

Oh, and:

http://www.nissan-gl...RVIEW/dpcc.html

I drive a car. I drink alcohol. I'm all for this.

The huge difference being that nobody is forced to buy that car.

Put it in all cars, jack up the price, and I guarantee you just as many people complain.... probably even more...
