Mularkey's record was worse, and right after he was hired, Gettleman said the Panthers have "a great young head coach" (Rivera is 50).

Not right now he doesn't. Giving Rivera a shot going forward was a job pre-req.
Now if we don't make the play-offs next year (or start out 2-8 per Rivera's norm) I'm pretty positive Gettleman will have the authority to clean house.
