Does Gettleman do that with Chico?

No.

Mularkey's record was worse, and right after he was hired, Gettleman said the Panthers have "a great young head coach" (Rivera is 50).

He should be able to. But, that's a story for a different day.

Actually Gettleman said we had a "solid young HC"

Fantasizing about that now but the Head Dude in Charge says otherwise.

I would think that him taking the job is approval of Rivera.

Mike Garafolo confirmed that both Gettleman and Ross knew Rivera was safe when they agreed to interview and neither saw it as a negative or a red flag.

He does have the ability to do it.

There's no indication that he has the desire.

Not right now he doesn't. Giving Rivera a shot going forward was a job pre-req.

Now if we don't make the play-offs next year (or start out 2-8 per Rivera's norm) I'm pretty positive Gettleman will have the authority to clean house.

Next year is just a throwaway year with a lame-duck head coach. This gives Gettleman a full year to get a grasp on the roster and what kind of coach we need to hire next year when we inevitably do so.
