Jon Gruden wanted Panthers job with total control

Funny thing about Kelly, Gruden.

They will be around next year if we need/want them still.

probably a couple other high profile HC candidates able to cherry pick their jobs who very well could have the panthers as the cherry they have their eye on.

Especially if Gettleman can get the cap looking reasonable in the next 2 years.

Meh, go research what Dungy did in the Playoffs the years before Gruden got there with this Buc team and see why he was blown out in Tampa Bay.

Remember, the team Gruden beat in the Super Bowl? The Raiders, the team Gruden built and Bill Callahan road Gruden's back to the Super Bowl with. ;)

There is one difference between the Bucs and us, they have a Lombardi.

And you're okay with how he handled the team after that?

Specifically, okay enough to hand over total control of the franchise?

Not full control

If he was smart, he shoulda just took the HC job and worked his way up

that's only if he didn't have a cush job somewhere else.

he's reached a place where he's obviously comfortable where he's at and doesn't need a job as a HC, but if he was able to build the team the way he wanted he'd do it.

he's doing it the smart way.

same with cowher if he's wanting control as well.

absolutely and if he's a guy that can prove himself in cleaning up the cap and getting in some good talent then a prospective coach may not feel bad working with gettleman.

Don't blame either one for wanting what they want.

I just wouldn't wanna be the guy that gives it to 'em.

if they can deliver i don't care how much control they have.

kraft gave belichick control over football operations really soon after he got the job and he didn't have that great of a record prior to that.

i just don't see what the big deal in letting an HC have control over personnel, which is essentially all belichick has and what any other HC wanting control wants. who knows best what players a coach needs than the coach? let him get the players he wants and let someone else handle the cap stuff.

Not advocating Gruden for the Panthers and no way with full control, that's a deal breaker.

But the 6 years following the Super Bowl win the Bucs did have 2 Playoff appearnces.

That's quite a bit better than what's been going on in Carolina lately.

Gruden did have one young QB with talent, that is until the Panthers removed his spleen, after that it was a mish mash of trash.

I think he'll probably be a good HC somewhere, but he's not my first choice, but if it was simply Rivera vs Gruden, Gruden it would be, HC responsibilities only however.

My biggest issue is that not that many of the "total control" guys are ever all that successful. The ones who do are the exception, not the rule. Heck, outside of Belichick, who can you name that's won a Super Bowl in forever?

All head coaches have control over who makes the final roster, who starts and who sits. Generally speaking, nobody has issue with that.

When it comes to control over who to draft, who ti sign in free agency, whose contract to extend, etc. That's where the issues start.

Veteran personnel guys generally hate when the coach inserts himself too much into the process. They want input from the coaches for sure, but they also complain that coaches have a tendency to "fall in love" with a guy's highlight tape and not look at the big picture.

Bottom Line: In today's NFL there's just too much to handle. That's why the total control model generally isn't effective anymore.

Would've love it. Gruden has been working with draft prospects and especially the QBs, and on draft nights. The man is a "motivator" and someone who knows talents.

But I'm fine with Gettleman as GM and a "lame duck" coach in Chico for right now. I'm sure the Panthers were no.1 on Chip Kelly's list. If Chico dissapoint, Kelly's name will become a hot surface in Charlotte real soon.
