I recall an article back in early 2004 that said Ricky was going to retire, but Smitty's wife called him & asked him to reconsider. Steve himself talked up how much Proehl helped his development... Absolutely bring him on board...

Love the guy. Met him at the Senior Bowl last year. Incredibly polite.


Also, he spent a ton of time with the other coaches (obviously.)

Just saying that because you typically get the idea that these former players who become coaches with their team's are pretty much around just because, but it was clear Ricky was involved with the coaching staff and becoming an NFL coach.


In other words, this move doesn't surprise me. It almost seems like its been an "in-the-works" type thing, and I do think it'd be a good move.

I remember speculating back in 2003 that Proehl might make a good OC someday. He was one of those super smart players that really understood the intricacies of the game.

And yeah, it keeps Steve Smith happy in the wake of firing his old college position coach.

I loved Ricky. He was just one of those guys who always found that open spot to sit in when you absolutely had to make a pass.
