My wife and I watched a couple episodes of Doomsday Preppers.

On 95% of the people on the show I completely agree.
I have seen maybe 2-3 families that were actually serious about preparing for a disaster.

I just watch it to write down the towns these folks live in.
When the solar flares hits my caravan of bandits will be raiding these locations.

I've watched a few of those shows too... I think they try and find the most unstable, weird people they can that are preppers... not really surprising for "reality" TV.

I certainly don't consider myself a "prepper" but just like anything else, taken in moderation, a lot of what they advocate is just smart. Never hurts to be prepared for anything.
