OK, so if no heir to Smitty is in our draft plans, or in the draft at all, then FA is critical

I no longer fear free agency with Getleman at the helm.

I expect to see some major housecleaning to give him some room to bring in a few players. I think he is going to play some hardball for a few months.

Yeah, that was really one of the points of this thread. Unlike others, I don't think that money is going to be the obstacle that it would appear to be today, because we are going to trade off some bad paper and also hand out some pink slips tomorrow.

This will be the most interesting and shocking offseason ever. Good thread.

I have said it a hundred times, we have no issue at WR! Stop with the damn "we need a WR #1" threads. Our WR's for the past 2 seasons have had above a 94% catch percentage and Lafell has one of the lowest drop pass percentagesin the league. His is better than SS.

We ha e other areas that has not been properly addressed in years. DT CB OG OT SS FS. ITS NOT THE OFFENSE THAT HAS HURT US THE PAST TWO SEASONS. Or are you people watching different games than me?

I ask again was wr our problem this year. Or was it play calling and Oline?

"Problems" tend to change each year.....

WR is due to be an issue with the manner in which we have failed to address it

Anyone who has been watching the Panthers for the last several years can see that we need an heir-apparent to Steve Smith. Hell, Smitty has basically said it himself. When Smitty went down a couple of years back our offense went to hell. Now, of course Cam wasn't here, but still. What do you think would happen if Smitty went down again? We'd be stuck with LaFell and Murphy, and perhaps Gettis or Pilares (or somebody). They all have their moments, but not with any type of consistency. Smitty is the one that defenses really account for at all times, and he's the one that takes pressure away from Olsen and the others, allowing them to do their thing. He is our only proven down-field threat. The others are the supporting cast---which is great---but they have yet to prove that they can be that guy if Smitty gets injured. Moreover, the receiving threat would probably multiply by two if we could get another game-changer at WR because Smitty could move to the slot which would essentially make him a stone-cold assassin to opposing defenses. This is what most of us who are calling for a WR1 envision. So it's not really about percentages, it's about maximizing offensive potential.

BTW, we all know we need help at other positions, but this doesn't mean we don't really need another down-field legitimate threat at WR. It's all a balancing act, and addressing needs are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

It does tend to change and I would be on the WR bandwagon if

1. We didn't have so many young Wr under 25 already on the roster.

2. If we didn't have other glaring holes. Like Oline, DT, and Secondary.

3. If we didn't have a lot of weapons already in the pass game. Tolbert, Olsen, and the RB will get their touches. Which takes away from a 2nd We.

4. If I felt a guy out of this draft could start day one over Lafell or the other guys who have years in this system with Cam. If any of these guys were Megatron or AJ Green type. Where their presents alone effects the game. Then it would be a different story.

I think Gettleman will restructure some of the contracts to help our cap problem and will cut a few that seems to stay on the IR. He will find a value pick on the FA list or make a trade for a WR.

Our biggest need is O-line and DT. If he is good at evaluating talent, he could find a jem in a later round in the draft. Its going to be fun again!

If you look at what Atlanta is doing on offense, don't you really see why some of us are putting a premium on obtaining another down-field threat?

Like I said before, the need for obtaining linemen does not make the need for obtaining a WR1 any less important, or vice versa. We need to find a way to do it all. Gett is going to have to evaluate each position and decide what's the best value and bang he can get for his buck (whether in FA, or the draft).
