top dawg

OK, so if no heir to Smitty is in our draft plans, or in the draft at all, then FA is critical

Anyone who has been watching the Panthers for the last several years can see that we need an heir-apparent to Steve Smith. Hell, Smitty has basically said it himself. When Smitty went down a couple of years back our offense went to hell. Now, of course Cam wasn't here, but still. What do you think would happen if Smitty went down again? We'd be stuck with LaFell and Murphy, and perhaps Gettis or Pilares (or somebody). They all have their moments, but not with any type of consistency. Smitty is the one that defenses really account for at all times, and he's the one that takes pressure away from Olsen and the others, allowing them to do their thing. He is our only proven down-field threat. The others are the supporting cast---which is great---but they have yet to prove that they can be that guy if Smitty gets injured. Moreover, the receiving threat would probably multiply by two if we could get another game-changer at WR because Smitty could move to the slot which would essentially make him a stone-cold assassin to opposing defenses. This is what most of us who are calling for a WR1 envision. So it's not really about percentages, it's about maximizing offensive potential.

BTW, we all know we need help at other positions, but this doesn't mean we don't really need another down-field legitimate threat at WR. It's all a balancing act, and addressing needs are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

I agree with this. This offense would explode with a #1 wr and ol

passing league and we're here wanting a power run offense trying to say we're ok with who we got.

meh....

we've got to get more WR talent and we can't dick around hoping we can land the next victor cruz udfa.

I ask again was wr our problem this year. Or was it play calling and Oline?

Completely correct and stopping the run at times.

That still doesn't answer that age old question about what will happen if Smitty goes down. We can, and will, do it all if we are to compete at the highest level sooner rather than later.

Also even with Smitty we need a another touchdown scorer. Smitty and lafell both only had 4tds, olsen had 5tds. We need to score more points

If you look at what Atlanta is doing on offense, don't you really see why some of us are putting a premium on obtaining another down-field threat?

Like I said before, the need for obtaining linemen does not make the need for obtaining a WR1 any less important, or vice versa. We need to find a way to do it all. Gett is going to have to evaluate each position and decide what's the best value and bang he can get for his buck (whether in FA, or the draft).

Are you talking about the same Atlanta team that we should have beaten twice (and would have if we had a better secondary)?

We might have more scores if we use our RB like we did later in the season.

That's why there are 2 power running teams in the Superbowl.

Again i ask how many games did we lose because of our (like some of you would say) Sub Par wr corp?

Or was it a bad O-line and a OC with his head up his ass that lost us games?

lol finally yes they have finally started making that stupid argument.

The reigning Super Bowl champions were the worst rushing team in the NFL last year facing off against a team who didn't fare much better.

The final four teams this year had two teams that orient more towards the pass, and two teams who failed miserably for years trying to ride to success and only succeeded once they had great QBs who threw the ball.

listen to the stories of todays game and i assure you it ain't got nothing to do with relic football. The 49ers replaced their starter mid year so they could give themselves a shot at this

Frankly I don't know why I'm even arguing this. Only the most mentally incompetent of posters would suggest we distance ourselves from a modern passing attack to revert to the same outdated offense that carried us to all those years of mediocrity. If you want to open yourself up to that kind of humiliation though then by all means

U gotta think Rivera and Co. are thinking about the WR position when they watch the Falcons do what they do. I heard we were gonna take Blackmon if he fell to us last year. This year they could be in position to get the best receiver in the draft, they could do it this year.

We can have a better Passing attack with a better O-line and a OC who can work the passing game with a traditional running game. Also it would help if they trust the QB to make adubiles on the field.

They also saw how they should have beaten the falcons twice. So Atlanta is no role model for us.
