California schools arming guards with assault rifles

School brings in high-powered assault weapons

You probably wouldn't be shocked to hear that the school at the center of the story is in the Los Angeles area.

For clarity, this process started before the Newtown massacre. Some schools have been doing it for years.

Looks to me like they are only arming them with semiautomatic rifles instead of assault rifles.

there is the crazy thing where people named some rifles "assault weapons" (semi autos that look like military but are not military rilfes) which are different from actual "assault rifles"

Purposely named this way by anti- gun groups to help generate support from the more neutral public parties that didn't know the difference. You put a ar-15 in front of them and they think your looking at a M-16

I doubt the authors of the article worked all that hard to define their terms.

At the moment, people really don't appear to be interested in semantic arguments hand fed by the NRA. As an engineer and a hobbyist I understand the thought process and the logic, but it's not really about what gun nuts think it's about. More important than magazines, or caliber, or rounds per minute, is public perception and the desire to DO something that can actually be done. If these types of weapons were "just like" other weapons, then no one would bother to keep buying them for their collections.

They are cool items for the hobby. They are not your magic gateway into becoming part of the Continental Army.

Ask Australia what banning assault rifles in the 90's did for them!

I'm shocked because of the lazy research put into this article.

Fontana is in San Bernardino County and not associated with the "Los Angeles" area.

No mention in the story this was originally conceived to combat gang violence from the very children this article would now make you believe they're ready to protect?
