Personally, I just do couch squats. And the occasional leg lift when I recline.

I haven't worked out in awhile and am looking to get back into things. I wonder if Insanity or P90x are to extreme to start out with? For not working out I'm in decent shape. I can play raquetball for a solid hour without dying and I road in a bike race last summer without training and finished 58 out of 780+ riders.
Depends on what you want to do. Insanity is quicker - daily routines/overall length. It's geared more towards losing weight and improving cardio. P90X is more about turning a marshmallow into a bronze scupture.

as for abs, i work my abs everyday. for me, the best way to do it is to mix about 30 in in between different lifts; gives my muscles a chance to relax, while also keeping my blood pumping, and, oh, targets a critical part of the body.

So what's up, OP? post your fit test results
Unfortunately Insanity and everything it comes with arrived later in the mail than It originally anticipated. I got here Tuesday and I'd like to follow the calendar strictly so I'll be starting this Monday after my birthday weekend...could be rough. Got a huge box of supplements in the mail as well today for when I'm trimmed down and ready to begin lifting heavy after I get myself ready to put on lean muscle with Insanity.

She's looking good. Too bad my lower back pain has relapsed and I can't show her how good I think she looks.

The wife just did her first fit test at the two-week mark and has lost 2" in the waist and a net loss of 5 pounds. She's decided that she really likes Insanity for the convenience of shorter workouts versus P90X looong workouts, and so far it seems that the results are very similar.

So how good of shape was she in when she started? I need to start something and with work travel, the kids activities, etc going to the gym is not realistic at this point in my life. I watched the infomercial last night and it looks hard but would be convenient to do in the garage.

Well she had taken a break for about a month after finishing her third round of P90X, so naturally she packed on several pounds during that time and of course it takes no time to fall out of shape. She, like you, has no time for a gym with our 21 month old daughter so the 35-45 minute workouts are perfect to fit in during afternoon nap time and still be able to accomplish some housework, etc.
The beauty of Insanity is that, unlike P90X, there's no big investment in weights and resistance bands. Pure cardio and using your own body weight for resistance. Therefore, it doesn't take much room to do it.
By no means was she completely out of shape, but she did struggle for the first week getting back into the groove and Insanity is no doubt intense from the warm up onward.
