3-4 Look For Carolina? Quoted from ESPN Insider

Recommended Posts

Can we just highlight this part so everyone sees it...

To be clear, the Panthers aren't going to switch to a full-time 3-4.

To be honest, this story essentially repackages a fair amount of material from a recent Panthers.com article (link)

From what I read and seen on Panthers.com McDermott wants to sprinkle in more 3-4 looks using all of our LBers and different looks out of the 3-4.

"That's a very good question," McDermott said. "When those four are healthy, there's a chance we'll experiment more with that. We've thrown a little bit of it out there, particularly on third down.

"Would we like to do more? Absolutely. How much of it? We'll see."

McDermott doesn't plan to overhaul the base 4-3 scheme that's been in place since he arrived in 2011, but he hopes to use some 3-4 looks in third down situations.

The reason? In addition to allowing four of the defense's better players to see the field at the same time, pressures out of a 3-4 scheme can be more varied and create more confusion for an offense.

"Let's face it, we're all creatures of habit, and offensive linemen are used to looking for jerseys with 90 on them," McDermott said. "When you can hide that fourth and fifth rusher, and those rushers come with a 50 number on, or a 40 number or 20 number at times with our pressure packages, that's where you create problems and confusion."

These are words straight out of McDermott's mouth, how can any of yall dispute this?

Because we've used situational 3-4 hybrid defenses for years.

Most teams do.

But we won't be making any big time switches unless there are some serious personnel moves this offseason.

Yes the Panther's have been running some 3-4 hybrid defenses on certain downs and distances, but he wants to run it more. No changes to the base defense, but even more 3-4 looks then the panther's have been using in the past. Of course he also said that last off season as well, not sure if injuries stopped that plan or what happened.

The offseason is now in full swing with this 3-4 thread.

Well done

I saw it mentioned on NFLN two days ago.

Panthers do not have the personnel to run a consistent 3-4.

IMHO it just means they don't have the balls to cut Beason.

JARVIS JONES, UGA OLB

We don't need anymore LBs but if he somehow managed to slip to us, you MUST take him.

He's the best FB player in the draft.

Yet another person who thinks you can just plug any random 4 linebackers into a 3-4 as long as they're "starting caliber."

Was expecting Bleacher Report, turned out to be ESPN. Same level of research I guess.

walterfootball is mocking him at like #17. they're claiming that scouts think he's going to flop at the combine and fall into the mid first.

i mean if we want a pass rusher that can pretty much line up anywhere...

If you disguised the website, you could use bleacher report and ESPN atricles interchangeably.

You're right tho, 3-4 OLBs are guys like Ware, Suggs, and Aldon Smith. Not Jon Beason.

Man I hope he isn't there when we pick. We don't need a LB but you have to take him.
