'THE GREAT GERRYMANDER OF 2012' SPOTLIGHTS N.C. Sam Wang, the founder of the Princeton Election Consortium, wrote in Sunday's New York Times about how the 2012 election results didn't reflect who was elected thanks to Republican redistricting: "Using statistical tools that are common in fields like my own, neuroscience, I have found strong evidence that this historic aberration arises from partisan disenfranchisement. Although gerrymandering is usually thought of as a bipartisan offense, the rather asymmetrical results may surprise you. ... I have developed approaches to detect such shenanigans by looking only at election returns. To see how the sleuthing works, start with the naïve standard that the party that wins more than half the votes should get at least half the seats. In November, five states failed to clear even this low bar: Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. ... In North Carolina, where the two-party House vote was 51 percent Democratic, 49 percent Republican, the average simulated delegation was seven Democrats and six Republicans. The actual outcome? Four Democrats, nine Republicans — a split that occurred in less than 1 percent of simulations. If districts were drawn fairly, this lopsided discrepancy would hardly ever occur."

Don't need Charlotte, Greensboro, and RDU controlling the entire government.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what this looks like.

Good grief...Brad Miller was behind the 2000 redistricting and drew himself a congressional district. By law (Voting Rights act of 65), we are mandated to have stupid districts like Mel Watts. Wake County has been butchered for decades to keep people like Miller, Price, and Etheridge in the house. Elmers ended up surprising Etheridge and was rewarded with a stronger district.

Want to end gerrymandering...tell the NY Times to quit lobbying the USSC to keep the Voting Rights Act alive. It's usefulness is over.

One thing became clear watching returns on election night 2012- Republican gerrymandering in North Carolina provided Republicans with serious electoral gains in the Tar Heel state. 2010 gerrymandering by Republicans is not the first time North Carolina has been identified as an egregious case of the practice. North Carolina’s 12th Congressional district which encompasses parts of Winston-Salem has long been known by students of political science as “political pornography” after the Wall Street Journal coined the phrase. Since its creation by NC Democrats in 1992 the 12th has been one of the most litigated congressional districts in American Republican redistricting in 2010 created almost impregnable state House/Senate districts and took a 7-6 Democratic majority and flipped it into a 10-3 Republican majority for North Carolinian’s congressional delegation… all without a single vote being cast. Groups like the right-wing Civitas Institute, which is financed by Art Pope who single-handily used millions to help the GOP win a majority in the legislature in 2010 for the purpose of controlling redistricting, likes to say that “Elections have consequences.” Rev. Barber from the NC NAACP contends that redistricting in 2010 has led to defacto, political segregation.

As the Atlantic Magazine reported earlier in the year in an article that focused, in part, of NC gerrymandering:

This ritual carving and paring of the United States into 435 sovereign units, known as redistricting, was intended by the Framers solely to keep democracy’s electoral scales balanced. Instead, redistricting today has become the most insidious practice in American politics—a way, as the opportunistic machinations following the 2010 census make evident, for our elected leaders to entrench themselves in 435 impregnable garrisons from which they can maintain political power while avoiding demographic realities.

McCrory’s New Pre-K Director May have Committed Voter Fraud in Forsyth County: A statewide voter registration search for Dianna Lightfoot reveals only one such person registered to vote in the state by that name. The address given for Dianna Lightfoot is 353 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem. 353 Jonestown Road is a UPS Store. The Forsyth County Board of Elections has confirmed that individuals may only register to vote using their residential address. They were unaware that Ms. Lightfoot had registered using an address other than a residential address, and are currently pursuing the appropriate response since being notified of the situation at noon today. The CBOE mapping specialist also confirmed that the address provided by Lightfoot was a UPS store.

The State Board of Elections confirmed that using an address on a voter registration form other than your residential address is a crime. According to North Carolina elections law, it is a Class I felony for anyone to provide false or misleading information on a Voter Registration form.

The voter registration application clearly states that residential address information must be provided, clarifying in parenthesis STREET ADDRESS WHERE YOU LIVE followed by the statement no P.O. Boxes or Rural Routes. At the end of the form, just to the right of the signature line on the application, highlighted in red letters, is the statement Warning: If you sign this form and know it to be false, you can be convicted of a Class I felony. http://www.camelcitydispatch.com/mccrorys-new-pre-k-director-may-have-committed-voter-fraud-in-forsyth-county/

pope in the new yorker magazine In a move that is sure to raise eyebrows, Governor Elect Pat McCrory today announced that Republican mega-donor and Rose’s Department store heir Art Pope will play a major role in the new Governor’s transition team. So will several of Art Pope’s current and former advisers Art Pope is famous in North Carolina for also using millions of his own dollars bank-rolling the GOP take-over of the General Assembly in 2010 as well as the scandal plagued Wake County school board that tried to bring back a form of school segregation. The take-over of the General Assembly led to the latest round of redistricting which was used, as one Republican consultant put it, “To make wombs for our guys and tombs for the other guys”. Pope is widely seen as one of the poster boys for the damage that the Citizens United decision has done to American politics. http://www.camelcity...-of-transition/

State for Sale

A conservative multimillionaire has taken control in North Carolina, one of 2012’s top battlegrounds

Art Pope Owns North Carolina Pope's triumph in 2010 was sweeping. According to an analysis by the Institute for Southern Studies, of the twenty-two legislative races targeted by him, his family, and their organizations, the Republicans won eighteen, placing both chambers of the General Assembly firmly under Republican majorities for the first time since 1870. North Carolina's Democrats in Congress hung on to power, but those in the state legislature, where Pope had focused his spending, were routed.

The institute also found that three-quarters of the spending by independent groups in North Carolina's 2010 state races came from accounts linked to Pope. http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/10/art-pope-owns-north-carolina/246295/

Wait, someone was spending money on state legislature races when a good percentage of voters don't even know who their state representative is? Talk about a waste of money.

Quite the contrary my good man! Fat Cat Political Money is most effective when the general public is ignorant of the truth. As the results from 2010 and 2012 in NC clearly show.

Good grief...hilarious how Pope has become the Koch brothers version of North Carolina.

I love the ignorant display Nanuq is showing regarding the Wake county school board situation.

Do you live in Wake county? Do you even know what the issue was about?

Here's a hint...had a lot to do with this.

http://www.nytimes.c...wer-choice-is-2

Hateful bigotted Mecklenbug school systems attempting to edumacate minorities...

Maybe you should ask exactly what was going on in Wake county (NOT just busing) that caused a firestorm to kick out the democrats in the mid 2000s.
