well it depends.the MSA is what the US uses overall for metro areas.

the 16 county thing is this ongoing coalition of counties that was started in the late 80's early 90's to regionalize the area to draw biz and money.

city limit pop Charlotte is bigger than Atlanta. but metro wise not the case.

im sorta a stat nerd when it comes to cities and population and trends and such.

It's predicted that the Houston area will double it's size in less than 5 years.

Consider yourselves lucky.

As far as fastest growing it's:

1. Austin

2. Houston

3. Dallas

4. Raleigh

5. Salt Lake City

Hopefully I'll be one of those 2 million in the Charlotte region by 2015.

At least I'm a yankee that loves the Panthers...

I'm guessing it's basically these counties minus Anson and Chester or Cleveland

Are you sure they aren't saying it will grow to 2 million by 2015. I think that makes more sense.

That makes more sense. No way the area could handle 2 million new people moving into the region. Plus there wouldnt be enough jobs for everyone.

While on the subject why is Greensboro and Winston Salem in two different MSA but Charlotte has 17 counties? Its called the Triad for a reason. Combined it would be close to 1.2 million people. Same thing with Raleigh/Cary Durham/Chapel Hill they would be at 1.5. Throw in Burlington and thats another 150,000 people.
