We're gonna have to bite the bullet and cut big name players. We need to wipe the slate clean for our future. That 80 million for 9 players is atrocious. We need to take care of it now, as much as we can, even if it is detrimental.

Agree. This is what Jerry Richardson meant when he said the organization needed someone who could "fix things".

It is really gonna suck this coming year but if we want a perennial playoff caliber team, we are going to lose our "Core" players. Everyone knows this, I got it. But are we as fans really prepared to see Steve, and Gross go? These two individuals have been a big part of how we identify this team. I have been reading a lot of posts on here and we keep dancing around the fact that getting rid of our top 4 or 5 paid players would put us SIGNIFICANTLY below the cap. This means losing some big name people for this team and would likely mean having a horrible season. But maybe not. The colts went through a similar situation and came out smelling like roses. We have an opportunity here. Through trade and cuts we can get well under the cap. It would be painful to us to see either of these to go, but it might actually happen. Ask yourself do you want to stay in this cap mess we are in and still lose? And dont say that we cant afford to lose them. There is not one person on the roster who got us to the playoffs last year and it is highly unlikely that any of them will do so this coming year. That means that there are very few if any that are immune.

I don't think we need to rush the gun cutting Jordan Gross now. We have to release Gamble, then we should let go of Ron Edwards and be under the cap by the March deadline. Then will have a little bit more time to look at restructures before June.
Gross needs to be restructured because he's still not replaceable, but we have Thomas, Munny, and Norman (who will be improved).

Agree w/you on Gross. The guy is no longer elite but he's still a good OT and a valuable member of the team.

You have to be careful if the answer every year to cap issues is "restructuirng". All you are doing is pushing the current problem into future years....which is why we are in the cap hell right now.

I am not advocating that we cut Gross. But, it is a real possibility.

He seems close to retirement anyhow, I think he has at least one more year in him. Would be nice to release him, and then re-sign him for two years....just to get that contract off the books.

We can't afford to cut Gross until we feel confident that who takes his spot can protect Cam.

didn't gross grade out as our best offensive lineman in 2012 per PFF?

yeah, he's getting paid too much for what he brings. yeah, he's no longer a top five tackle. but there aren't a lot of things i can think of that we could realistically do that would destabilize our line quite like cutting gross without a very strong contingency plan would.

Sam Shields is one guy if we do free enough cap room I would love us to get a decent deal (3-4 yr) with. I think he was behind some quality talent in GB and stepped up big when needed. He's shown he could excel in a larger role imo and would be a great addition.

Kevin Boothe is a solid vet we can get at a good price that Gettleman may have some pull with. It would be ideal to have a vet next to Kalil at least on one side. Draft a future LT like a Bakhtiari in RD2 and nab Boothe.

This let's us focus on either D or WR in the 1st imo with two guys with a lot of quality road ahead for a potential decent price.

Seneca would be an inexpensive upgrade over Jimmy with Derek gone

A Delanie Walker/James Casey type is a HIGHLY underrated asset for a team. Great O-Hybrid & ST play, being a Brockel replacement (who is gone UFA, a problem on kickoffs and not an offensive weapon). These types when used right do what Richie can't and adds some dimensions to your offense.

We are not going to cut our top players or dump guys like Smith until we have someone to replace them. We are also not going to try and get 20 million under the cap. Gettleman is tasked with straightening out the cap and finding talent to build a consistent winner, not gut the team and do another 2010. We all know how that worked out and we are still rebuilding from that debacle. Richardson needs to win soon not 5 years down the road. he might not be around for that. We can easily get under the cap cutting a few players like Gamble and restructuring a few contracts like Beason. We won't be bringing in a bunch of free agents so we really can't dump our team leaders.

Well with 2.2 mill cleared up today with Kalil restructuring and the highly probably scenario in which Gamble is cut, we're sitting at at roughly 2.6 over the cap.

Gary Williams and Hangartner should be easy cuts who account for roughly 2.6

...and people thought we'd have no room for Free agency.

Also add restructuring Gross to that as well as cutting Nakamura and Ron Edwards, along with a few other cuts or restructures (D-will among others) and we can fill a hole or two. (lol)
