Hong Kong (CNN) -- North Korea's nuclear test prompted united condemnation and a vow of tough action from the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday.
The council issued a statement slamming an underground nuclear test that jolted the already fragile security situation in Northeast Asia.

---

The test probably took place near P'unggye and yielded "several kilotons," according to assessments cited by the U.S. director of national intelligence. It drew condemnation from around the globe and prompted an emergency Security Council session Tuesday morning.

Surprised there isn't already some discussion on this...

Sabre rattling by NK or more than that? What do they want? They have to have some agenda other than just pissing the world off... Japan and SK are freaked and even China is telling them to settle down.

I have no idea what the end goal is here. They already have nukes which means nobody will invade, but they cant use them without guaranteeing their own downfall. Any hope that Kim Jong Un is more reasonable than his dad is basically over.

The only thing keeping North Korea from falling into obscurity and even further abject poverty is it's military aggression. Extreme communism almost always results in failure especially when it is run by a dictator and the military. What else are you going to do as the esteemed leader or a general in the army. Become pacifist? Admit that your own policies are destroying your country?

You don't save your job in the short term by feeding your own people in this model.

Doing something stupid and getting your people to revolt would be the best thing for NK but it's not happening anytime soon.

You do this to keep the charitable contributes flowing.
They shut them off, you do something dumb, accept olive branch....
this isn't the first time this has happened.

Fact is NOBODY involved wants the status quo changed...sadly.

It's true. And their esteemed leader isn't nuts either he is probably smart as poo. Same with Ahmadinejad.

Fwiw, it actually does matter, quite a bit.

-Critical area of the world with a good portion of the worlds economy might there. A war in the vicinity could send the world into a another recession.

-Several US allies in the vicinity of an unpredictable leadership that has already launched or tried to launch attacks on its neighbor. And has access to nuclear weapons.

Most importantly, lots of people could be killed especially if nukes are used (including some of the 20 thousand plus US troops in South Korea, with more in Japan and Okinawa).

of course, events in Korea pale in comparison to the daily debate over which side has more foolish voters, democrats or republicans. Or who will be more impacted by voter id laws, the 10 people who committed voter fraud, or the 11 people who don't have an id or any of the other discussions currently ongoing. ;)

Fwiw, I imagine China is quite pissed at them, but I think the amount of influence the Chinese really have is extremely limited. Other than threatening to cut off trade, there isn't much they can do. And cutting off trade will likely make things worse.

I actually made this to hear what DD had to say...

Idk what their end game is, but its not good.

Everyone says they're not worried about NK, but NK may just get so desperate they do something really, really stupid that starts an out-of-control situation.
