“Those aren’t meteors falling, it’s the Americans testing new weapons,” Zhirinovsky, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, told journalists several hours after the Emergencies Ministry began issuing statements on the incident, which has injured hundreds and damaged scores of buildings.

He also said US Secretary of State John Kerry had wanted to warn Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about the “provocation” on Monday, but couldn’t reach him

"Close to 1,000 people were reported injured, but only three seriously enough to be hospitalized, according to the official RIA-Novosti agency. Windows were blown out across a wide area, and several buildings were reported damaged, including a Chelyabinsk factory, whose roof caved in"

I think there is something the government know that they aren't telling us. Lately on history channel or nat geo, can't remember which one, they've been talking about astroids in outerspace and how it is likely they are to hit earth. Then we hear on the news about an astroid coming very close to earth and now this in Russia.

I agree with beans... pure coincidence. This could (and probably does) happen everyday in the middle of the ocean and nobody would ever, ever notice...

...and I mean it's not like most of our planet IS ocean or anything.

I have this image of the Soviets getting out the keys and heading to the launch computer when I see that first video of the meteor coming across the sky

I see my house.

I would say the only spot that it wouldnt be noticed is the Southeast Pacific. If it happened anywhere between Australia, japan and the US people would see it from planes.

Comet ISON also on the way here. It apparently originated from Oort Cloud just like some of the more recent meteors. It is a concern in my opinion that some power projects meteors and comets toward the earth.
